Why I chose King’s – Robotics & Intelligent Systems

By Alicia Beylan, MSci Robotics & Intelligent Systems, Department of Informatics

I’m Alicia, a fourth year student of MSci Robotics & Intelligent Systems. I’m also the 4th year student representative and president of KCL Tech Society.

When I was deciding where to study, I really wanted a university that had good support from the department to grow professionally, a good student environment, that was in London (I’m from a big city so really wanted to be in London) and that was well ranked. King’s had all of these requirements! The department is fantastic in supporting you with your personal projects and to open opportunities for you. The student environment is great and there are lots of societies that you can join such as Tech Society and Robotics Society. And of course, King’s is ranked in the top 20 universities! King’s was the only university that had all my requirements, so I decided to come here.

During my first year I lived in Great Dover Street Apartments which was fantastic because I had the opportunity to meet people from different degrees. Plus, is very central so you can literally walk to campus!

When I started, I enrolled in BSc Computer Science but at the end of my first semester I started getting more interested in AI and Robotics but couldn’t decide between the two of them so decided to choose Robotics AND Intelligent Systems. My degree is great, there are lots of opportunities to help in the research projects of the professors, the opportunity to work with PhD students for your dissertation and we have fantastic labs that you can use freely.

London is a fantastic city to be studying something related to tech as there are meet ups happening every week, lots of hackathons (HackKing’s, Anvil Hack, HackCity, etc) and all the tech companies are here which means that the opportunities for you to network and potentially land an internship are huge. The past two summers I interned in Deliveroo as a web developer and I already landed my grad job there (:
