Activities which work best when students have a level of comfort with each other, and with some encouragement are likely to be willing to participate and make contributions. Typically these activities entail discussing contrasting views. However, there’s a first time for everything, and at some stage inexperienced students will try these for the first time. First times can be tricky, so ideally the first time shouldn’t be the only time – observe students carefully and be ready to do it again with refinements.
