We’re Listening To … The Perfect Study Playlist

Everyone’s optimal study environment differs.

Some people thrive in complete silence without sounds or movement to distract them from the task at hand. Others are inspired by a view and the hum of chatter in the background.

Music can be a vital part of many peoples study environment. Making that special playlist depending on what you’re studying or what mood you’re in can help keep your mind on track.

Classical

Traditionally classical music has been associated with improving concentration (although this has not been scientifically proven). The sounds of Mozart or Beethoven can be calming and therefore reduce anxiety that can come with studying.

Instrumentals

Listening to instrumentals is quite a popular choice as people are less likely to get distracted by the lyrics of the songs.  Jazz, Ambient House or the soundtrack to your favourite movie could be a good start.

Timeless Melodies

Some times an up-tempo rhythm can be useful, for those moments when you are not feeling very motivated to study.  A bit of pop or any uplifting music just to get you in the mood.

Nature

The varied sounds of nature can be great background noise for really zoning out and getting some quality work done.

Whatever your chosen style or genre it’s best to have some ready-made playlists that you can alternate between. While choosing the best music to listen to while studying is important, you should avoid spending hours selecting the songs. At the end of the day, what matters is not choosing the best music in the world but that your study is productive.

We’re Taking Mondays Back !

It is quite common to feel a bit down in January. The festivities are over, the decorations are taken down, and it’s back to reality. For some of you, it has been full on with exams and deadlines.  There is a particular day of the month considered the most depressing and unsurprisingly, it’s a Monday. Boo.

Dubbed ‘Blue Monday,’ it typically falls on the third Monday of the year. This year January 21st bears the brunt of this dreaded title.

The concept was first publicised as part of a 2005 press release from holiday company Sky Travel. Dr Cliff Arnall claimed that due to some factors including weather, debt and time since Christmas, ‘scientifically’ this time of year is quite depressing for us in the northern hemisphere. He even came up with a formula to calculate the date. Since then, this January Monday has been lumbered with negative and miserable connotations.

However, In a recent interview for the Independent Dr Arnall has said that it was not his intention to make this a negative day but in fact  to ‘ encourage people, where possible, to take a positive outlook on the time of year as an opportunity for new beginnings and change.’

So we are taking back our Mondays and making an intentional effort to make the 21st January the best Monday of the year so far!

Here are our five ways to beat the Monday Blues:

1. Express Gratitude

Starting your day by listing the things you are grateful for is quite literally one of the best ways you can start any day. Doing this first thing on a Monday morning will remind you of all of the great things in your life and give you a whole bunch of reasons to get on with your day.

2. Get moving in the sunlight

Natural sunlight increases our Vitamin D level which in turn boosts serotonin. So why not go for a lunchtime stroll to soak up some of those sun rays and boost endorphins? Leaving you feeling calmer and happier.

Check out what sports activities are happening on the BeActive Timetable.

3. Watch your favourite film

Give yourself something to look forward to at the end of your day by planning an evening snuggled up with your favourite blanket and your favourite movie. You could even invite some of the other students living in your residence to join you. Lose yourself in the story of some of your favourite characters.

4.Sing The Blues Away with KCL ResiLife

Singing in a group can be a great way to reduce stress. Along with the socialising aspect, singing has been known to lower blood pressure due to specific breathing techniques similar to yoga methods.  So why not spend your evening destressing by singing some of our favourite uplifting songs.

5. Burgers and Board Games KCLSU events

Get to know some new people and eat some good food to start your week off right. Head over to Guys Bar from 5 pm every Monday for their Burgers and Board Games event.  Play any of their board games, and the winner gets a free Pint! (T&C’s applied! One Pint per game/hour).

So whatever you choose to do today, make this Monday a happy Monday!

Meet an RA: Felicia

Are you interested in joining us as an RA for 2017/18? Recruitment is now open, head to our recruitment web pages for more info!

‘This year has been my second go around with having the honorary role of Resident Advisor.  Back, like way back, in my undergraduate career in the United States, I had the privilege of serving in this position and I’m so glad to be back doing it again. This time around I think I’m able to relate even more to my residents.  Being an international postgrad student in a mostly international and post grad student residence a lot of us are in similar shoes which makes this experience even more meaningful.

In our international residence halls, I’ve been able to meet people from countries all over the world. Learning bits of information about new cultures and customs. And slowly building my list of new places visit (double checking with people that I have a place to stay when I come of course).

Angel Lane to me is a warm and inclusive home attributed to the hard work and dedication of the other RAs and Wardens on my team.  By hosting brunches themed around the different cultural areas our residents represent, to making our selves visible with cup cake decorating RA drop-in sessions and just being silly during Karaoke and dance parties, Angel Lane is a home I’m proud to be an RA of.

For those that don’t know, I use to be a teacher.  An actual elementary school (or as they say here, Primary School) teacher.  Although I think that experience has truly shaped me into the person I am today, I believe the role of an RA has continued to strengthen my skills in communications, organisation and of course leadership.  To make Angel Lane as inviting as we can, as RAs we must put ourselves out there and make ourselves visible and available to residents.  That means stepping outside of my comfort zone, knowing that I may not know everything there is to know about London, but having the confidence to still intentionally check-in and speak with residents. This means having conversations in not the most conventional of places, such as the lifts, laundry rooms, vending machines, etc. I’m also challenging myself to have difficult conversations with residents who may have issues within their flat/with flat mates to build a better community.  This of course,  builds my confidence in speaking with diverse groups of people outside of Angel Lane as well which is a skill I believe we all can benefit from.

And can I just say, my social media skills have increased tremendously since being an RA.  In this day and age (said by oldies everywhere) social media is one of the largest modes of communication.  And I find myself informing residents of King’s and Resilife events on a regular through social media as well as getting groups together to explore the city of London. I’ve also used it to inform residents about things I care a lot about like ways to stay involved with recent pollical issues and even organise residents to come with me to Calais France to volunteer and help with the Refugee Crisis.

As an RA I’m building new relationships with so many different people and continuing to grow as a professional. I’ve had such great and memorable experiences during my time here in London so far and many are in part due to being an RA.  I can’t wait to see what else this next semester has in store!’

Recipe of the Month: Tuna Pasta Bake

1488_2_1432023782Each month we’ll be picking our favourite, tried and tested, budget meal recipe. This month is a delicious tuna bake recipe from none other than Jamie Oliver. So easy and great for the whole flat!

SERVES:  6

COOKS IN:  1 HOUR

Ingredients

  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • olive oil
  • 1 pinch of dried chilli flakes
  • 3 x 400 g tins of chopped tomatoes
  • 1 bunch of fresh basil , (or use 1 teaspoon dried oregano instead)
  • sea salt
  • freshly ground black pepper
  • 500 g dried penne
  • 2 x 180 g tins of tuna from sustainable sources , (275g drained weight)
  • 150 g mature Cheddar cheese

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200ºC/400ºF/gas 6. Peel and finely chop the onion and garlic. Place a large shallow pan over a medium-high heat. Add 2 tablespoons of oil, the onion, garlic and chilli flakes (if using) and fry for 5 to 10 minutes, or until softened, stirring occasionally. Turn the heat up to high and pour in the chopped tomatoes. Tear the leaves from the basil stalks, keeping a few pretty ones aside for later, and stir them into the sauce. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, place a large pan of water on to boil. Once boiling, add a good pinch of salt followed by the pasta. Cook according to the packet instructions, draining just before it’s done – it’ll finish cooking in the oven.
  3. Drain the tuna and stir through the sauce, making sure you don’t break it up too much. Season with a tiny pinch of salt and a generous pinch of black pepper. When the pasta is ready, drain and tip straight into the sauce. Toss and coat the pasta in the sauce, then transfer to an ovenproof baking dish (roughly 25cm x 30cm).
  4. Coarsely grate the cheese and sprinkle over the pasta. Arrange the reserved basil leaves on top, then sprinkle lightly with black pepper. Drizzle lightly with oil, then place in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden and bubbling. Leave to stand for 5 minutes, then serve with a nice salad.

Four Cultural Activities for January

We all know that it’s hard to drag yourself out of bed when it’s below zero outside and every time you leave the house you risk injury-by-deceptive-footpath-frost.

London never stops, even in winter. So it’s time to pull on your third layer of thermals and head to some of these free activities happening around the city this January.

AlternativeLondon

‘Alternative’ Walking Tours

You won’t be seeing Tower Bridge or Big Ben on this walking tour. Take a walk through East London with one of the city’s most acclaimed walking companies for free. Discover the street art and history of Brick Lane and Shoreditch, areas which have surprisingly only recently been gentrified.

Alternative London has won a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence for the past four years, so it’s fair to say these tickets will sell out fast.  Book your ticket here.
