Why did I choose to study French?

Studying a language is an excellent way to expand your linguistic comprehension skills

There are many reasons why I decided studying French at King’s College London was the correct pathway for me. Studying French has been something that has always been a passion for me and I have always been inspired by language learning. This passion coupled with the importance of multilingualism in today’s globalised world fuelled my motivations to study this subject.  Studying Modern Languages is a skill that goes beyond just communication – it demonstrates adaptability, cultural awareness and cognitive flexibility. Learning more than one language is a valuable asset in the workplace and it opens up a plethora of job opportunities in the ever increasing competitiveness of the job market.

Why did I choose French specifically?

The French language holds a strong position in international diplomacy. It is spoken by over 300 million people worldwide and it is an official language in numerous international organisations such as the United Nations (UN). French is not only useful for those interested in International Relations but plenty of other sectors like business, journalism, tourism, law and others recognise the advantage of French speakers who are capable of thriving in diverse and interconnected global environments. The amount of opportunity studying French offers students when they graduate was one of the biggest motivations in studying this subject.

Why study French at King’s College London?

My choice to study French at Kings was fuelled by the expert teaching that is provided here. King’s offers opportunities to engage with native French speakers from the start of your course. Each week you have one hour of speaking practice in small groups so that you can really consolidate your knowledge and apply your skills to real life conversations. Not only this but through the Kings Language Centre all students of French have the opportunity to book free speaking practice lessons. The language practice at Kings goes beyond traditional classroom learning and through things like the year abroad, The French society and speaking classes there is a gold mine of opportunity to practice and consolidate your language learning.  In addition to this one notable aspect that pushed me into choosing French as a subject of study was the inclusion of modules that delve into the rich history and culture of France. In my second year, I have been studying all about Modern French History which not only allows me to improve my linguistic proficiency but also deepens my understanding of the cultural context in the countries where French is spoken. This is something I really enjoy learning about.  Modern French History has sparked my curiosity about global affairs, and understanding the socio-political landscape of France enhances my ability to engage in informed conversations, whether they revolve around historical perspectives, current events, or the cultural dynamics that shape French society.

In conclusion, the teaching style used at Kings allows me to not only master the French language but also understand and learn about the features of French society, politics and culture. By studying French you can prepare yourself for a diverse array of career paths, stand out in an ever competitive market and most of all have fun and enriching experiences that will create many amazing memories.
