Why study Liberal Arts?

By Anna, a Liberal Arts student

The time has come; high school comes to an end and you need to choose a degree. If you are interested in studying a wide range of subjects, keep on reading to find out about the great course that is Liberal Arts!

Liberal Arts is a BA degree that allows you to explore a vast range of disciplines and craft your own degree across the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. You can select modules from Music, Literature, Politics, History, International Relations, Film Studies, Philosophy, Geography, Digital Culture, Theology and Religious Studies.

In your first year, you can choose from a variety of subjects, and then choose a major subject for your second and third year that forms most of your degree. Don’t worry though, there are still credits for you to take subjects from the other departments in your second and third year.

As this degree is not as common in Europe as it is in the United States, some people may be skeptical about it. People ask me “So, you’re studying Liberal Arts? What are you going to do with that?” Truth is, because of its interdisciplinary, you could pursue multiple career options in social sciences, media, governmental apparatus, public relations, and many more.

The outcome of a bachelor’s degree should be the development of skills, while studying something that you are truly passionate about. You will form a critical way of thinking – a skill valued by employers. The process of communicating with academic experts will inspire you to learn and develop.

Personally, I have discovered my passion for Digital Culture, which I never have known about if it wasn’t for studying Liberal Arts.
