King’s Water member and European Space Agency make breakthroughs in invasive plant surveillance

Dr. Emma Tebbs

Dr Emma Tebbs has worked on a study to look at invasive floating vegetation funded by the ESA. Using satellite imagery, she and her colleagues have investigated methods to survey and monitor invasive weeds.  Working with stakeholders from Kenya, South Africa, Australia and US, they have developed products for mapping floating weeds based on Sentinel-1 radar imagery and Sentinel-2 optical imagery. The UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, who were leading the project, integrated Emma’s satellite products into a pilot web portal, where users can access maps and timeseries showing the distribution of the plant over time to support their weed control programmes.
