One of our King’s Water members, Dr. Katie Meehan, recently contributed to an article that addresses global water insecurity. In response to UN Sustainable Development Goal 6, water sanitation for all, and the historical neglect of western countries tackling water insecurity in their own borders, “A Global Agenda for Household Water Security: Measurement, Monitoring and Management,” introduces the “Household Water Insecurity” (HWISE) approach to identify water dilemmas facing the global community. The HWISE is meant to indicate specific demographics who suffer from water insecurity, evaluate the effectiveness of water policy, and manage complex infrastructures that are meant to achieve water equity. A three-step approach – measurement, monitoring, and management – is used as a comprehensive framework to eliminate water insecurity. “Measurement” incorporates tools such as water insecurity scales to determine household water insecurity in low to middle income households. “Monitoring” takes advantage of information and communication technology to evaluate residential water demand for houses. “Management” encourages the creation of innovative infrastructures, such as “smart handpumps,” to better monitor rural water systems.
