Undergraduate Social ‘n Sports

So, you have accepted your offer to join the King’s Undergraduate Summer School, and you now probably have an idea of what you are going to study, where you are going to live and how much your workload will be. This is the perfect moment to start thinking about how to spend your free time. You probably want to go sightseeing or attend a musical or have some fish and chips.

We have put together the below social activities that you can enjoy during the Undergraduate Summer School programme.

Oxford and Windsor Day Trip

Oxford is known for its beautiful canal, pedestrianised central business district and fascinating architecture. In Windsor, you can visit the largest and oldest inhabited castle in the world and the Queen’s favourite weekend home.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre Trips

To celebrate some of the greatest works of William Shakespeare we will be offering our students the opportunity to attend a performance at The Globe Theatre where Shakespeare’s plays are performed like they were in his time.

Session one students can attend a live performance of Hamlet (10 July 2018 at 7:30pm), and  Session two students can attend Othello (1 August 2018 at 7:30pm).

Harry Potter Studio Tour

Step across the threshold of the Great Hall, walk down Diagon Alley, visit Number 4 Privet Drive, board the night bus, and take a photo on Hagrid’s Motorbike.

Gym Membership and BeActive

King’s Sport and King’s Summer Programmes are delighted to be offering gym membership packages to summer students. Membership includes full access to the fitness equipment and access to a variety of group fitness classes such as yoga, pilates and spinning (booking required). Here is an example timetable. If you wish to purchase a gym membership, please do so via the e-store.

In addition to this, A BeActive programme is available to all students, which consists of:

  • Weekly Table Tennis sessions
  • Weekly GoodGym Run – a chance to work out and volunteer in the community at the same time
  • Bi-Weekly Rave Runs

My King’s Experience- Anaelle Prioux

My name is Anaelle, but everyone calls me Ana. This year I was lucky enough to experience King’s College and the beautiful city of London. The first thing that comes to mind when thinking about my experience at King’s is the international environment. It would have been easier for me to stick with people from my country- France, but King’s has students from over 100 different nationalities, so I wanted to take advantage of having a multicultural university experience.

My closest friends were from Hong Kong, Singapore and Ireland. They’ve taught me how to make dumplings and speak rudimental Irish. It’s honestly a lot of fun to be around students from different cultures and it’s made my time at King’s a lot more enjoyable.

Another important aspect is that this international culture is also present in the academic life. When studying at King’s, you get professors and seminar leaders from all over the world who specialise in interesting disciplines and are able to teach you new perspectives. In the History department, there are a lot of non-Eurocentric modules about post-colonial Africa, early modern China and the African heritage of Latin American cultures.

So, what makes studying at King’s a good experience? The location of it’s main campuses. Waterloo, Strand and London Bridge are all in the heart of London, in bustling areas that are also close to major monuments and attractions. It helps with discovering the city, especially if you’re new to London like me! Trafalgar Square, the West End and the National Gallery are all around the corner from Strand and Waterloo. From Guy’s campus, you can easily pop to the Tate Modern, the Shard and my favourite- Borough Market with all the amazing food options it offers (I highly recommend Ethiopian Flavours and Luminary Bakery).

The last point I’d like to mention is the variety and quality of non-academic activities organised by King’s College London Student Union (KCLSU). King’s Sports runs a great programme called BeActive and organises sport sessions in badminton, yoga, football, basketball, running (and a lot of other activities). It’s been a really good way for me to stay fit without the commitment of a formal sports team!

Undergraduate Social Programme 2017

We are excited to announce the details of the Undergraduate Summer School Social Programme for this year. Our team works with the King’s College London Student Union to create a programme that give students the chance to explore London in their free time, whilst making friends from all around the world.

On the first day we are holding a new event for this summer. Our Instahunt is a free event to attend and is a great opportunity to meet new people, explore the city around campus and win prizes. Discover awesome locations around King’s and London, take a photo, upload to Instagram and possibly win a prize. Following on from the Instahunt is our welcome drinks at the Knights Templar, where you can grab a drink and a bite to eat, find out who the winners of the Instahunt are and mingle with fellow Summer Schools students.

Untitled design (2)We have a number of activities that take place during the weekends of the Summer School. For both sessions we have a Saturday day trip to Oxford and Windsor. Explore the beautiful architecture of the city, which is of course  home to the world famous Oxford University. If you wish to attend in Session One you can book your tickets here. Another full day trip we are holding for this summer is a trip to the fantastic Harry Potter Studio Tour. Explore Leavesden which the film series made it’s home for almost ten years. Take a walk along Diagon Alley, visit Privet Drive and (new for this year) explore the Forbidden Forest. Purchase your ticket for Session One here and Session Two here. Tickets for this event will sell fast so do get in quick.

For those interested in learning more about the city our London walking tours would be a great social programme activity for you. Our Session One walks, which are new for this year, are a Street Art Walking Tour and a Sherlock Holmes Walking Tour. In Session Two we are holding a set of fantastic tours, which were extremely popular with our students last year. The tours for this session are a Harry Potter Walking Tour and a Theatreland Walking Tour.

As well as weekend activities we also have a number of events taking place during the evenings that you can get involved in. Each session of the Summer School will have a Boat Party on the Thames. Take in the spectacular views as you cruise along the river, with sights such as Tower Bridge, Big Ben and the Shard making an appearance. For students wishing to attend in Session One please book here and Session Two students here.

In addition to this we have tickets to a number of different shows throughout the programme. For those interested in comedy, our night out to the Top Secret Comedy Club is a must see. If you’re interested in these events book your tickets for Session One or Session Two now. This year we are offering students tickets to a West End show and a performance at the Globe Theatre. Details for our West End shows are yet to be announced but you can purchase tickets to the shows at the Globe Theatre already. Session One students will be going to see Romeo & Juliet and Session Two students will be off to watch Much Ado About Nothing.

Undergraduate Summer School Social Programme

As summer is edging ever nearer we wanted to let you know all about our exciting social programme for students at the Undergraduate Summer School. The Summer Programmes team works with King’s College London Student Union to create a social programme that compliments the academic programme and gives you the chance to explore London and make new friends. Activities will take place on evenings and weekends, meaning once class is finished for the day, you are able to take part in some (or all) of these excellent events.

For each session there will be an ‘Official’ Opening Party and also a Thames Boat Party. Both are great opportunities to make new friends, spend time with your classmates and to chat to staff at KCLSU and the Summer Programmes team.

theatreshowsLondon is home to the West End and is a hub for musical and other theatrical performances. And for this years summer school, students will get the opportunity to see some of the best shows around. For both sessions there are tickets available to see The Lion King. In Session One you will also be able to see Wicked and in Session Two you will have the opportunity to purchase tickers to Aladdin. Tickets are limited so do book early to avoid disappointment!

We also have some brilliant day time activities. In both sessions students are able to spend the day exploring the historical towns of Oxford and Windsor– the Queen’s favourite holiday home. And for Session One only there will be a number of tickets available for the Harry Potter Studio Tour. Here you will spend time admiring the sets featured in the movies, as well as sampling butter beer and riding a broomstick.

wtourWalking around London is by far the best way to see it. And this summer you’ll also be able to take part in a number of walking tours. In the first session students are able to explore the quirky Camden Market and the quaint Notting Hill and Portobello Market. And in the second session you’ll be able to visit the locations used in the Harry Potter movies, as well as a Theatre Land Tour of London.

There are a limited amount of tickets for some events, so if you really do want to go book as soon as you can.
