King’s faculty and staff ensure you experience our globally-renowned, research-led teaching through interactive seminars, lectures, group discussions, off-campus excursions and guest speakers across all modules.

So, if you love languages and have always been fascinated by the origins of some languages maybe Ancient Greek or Latin are the modules for you. Or, if your passion is in the arts and you would like to explore all the culture that surrounds London perhaps Museum of London: Curating the City is for you. Maybe you are thinking more globally, and this is just one of the many international experiences that you want to have. In that case, International Business, International Relations or International Commercial Law might be the modules that will open your horizons worldwide.

Finally, this is a great opportunity to get a taste of what University life in the heart of London is really like. If you are considering further studies in the UK or at King’s, why not try before you buy?

Memorable 2018 Summer

This Summer is one of the top 10 warmest summers on record in the UK, according to the Met Office, which makes it already unforgettable for many people. But it is particularly memorable for our students who decided to take part of their summer holiday to learn, explore and go on an adventure to King’s College London.

To many people, that was the first time that they have taken a flight alone, travelled away from their countries, spoken English 24/7 and met people from so many countries in a short period of time.

No one can get bored in London, especially during summer, and it’s often difficult to choose what to do during free time.

Most of our programmes include excursions and tours which help our students to explore London attractions. West End Theatre, Harry Potter Tour, Imperial War Museum, Royal Courts of Justice and the Wellcome Collection are some of the places where our students have been.

UK Summer classroom experience

Summer programmes are an amazing opportunity to have an educational experience in the United Kingdom. It can be different from other countries, and that’s what make it unique.

Classes are a mix of ways to learn, from academic sessions to tours, guest Lectures, case studies, debates, critical thinking sessions, workshops, but it also involves independent study.

We really encourage students to participate in classes, express their ideas and views, and share it with all their peers.

It’s not always easy to adjust to a new education system, but often it makes you see things from a different perspective.

Summer in Berlin

Studying abroad is bound to be a life experience. It takes you out of your comfort zone, it challenges you and it teaches you to be more open. It also gives you the incredible opportunity get other points of view and explore another culture.

Every year, we welcome students from all corners of the world in London, but likewise many of our students also get the opportunity to go abroad.

Recently, 50 King’s students travelled to Berlin and explored German culture and history. It was an interactive, skills and knowledge-building programme, where they were intellectually stimulated and personally empowered. They were encouraged to think about their personal agency and the impact in their communities.

Undergraduate Social ‘n Sports

So, you have accepted your offer to join the King’s Undergraduate Summer School, and you now probably have an idea of what you are going to study, where you are going to live and how much your workload will be. This is the perfect moment to start thinking about how to spend your free time. You probably want to go sightseeing or attend a musical or have some fish and chips.

We have put together the below social activities that you can enjoy during the Undergraduate Summer School programme.

Oxford and Windsor Day Trip

Oxford is known for its beautiful canal, pedestrianised central business district and fascinating architecture. In Windsor, you can visit the largest and oldest inhabited castle in the world and the Queen’s favourite weekend home.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre Trips

To celebrate some of the greatest works of William Shakespeare we will be offering our students the opportunity to attend a performance at The Globe Theatre where Shakespeare’s plays are performed like they were in his time.

Session one students can attend a live performance of Hamlet (10 July 2018 at 7:30pm), and  Session two students can attend Othello (1 August 2018 at 7:30pm).

Harry Potter Studio Tour

Step across the threshold of the Great Hall, walk down Diagon Alley, visit Number 4 Privet Drive, board the night bus, and take a photo on Hagrid’s Motorbike.

Gym Membership and BeActive

King’s Sport and King’s Summer Programmes are delighted to be offering gym membership packages to summer students. Membership includes full access to the fitness equipment and access to a variety of group fitness classes such as yoga, pilates and spinning (booking required). Here is an example timetable. If you wish to purchase a gym membership, please do so via the e-store.

In addition to this, A BeActive programme is available to all students, which consists of:

  • Weekly Table Tennis sessions
  • Weekly GoodGym Run – a chance to work out and volunteer in the community at the same time
  • Bi-Weekly Rave Runs

My Summer at King’s: Margherita Feleppa

King’s College London Summer School offers a wide variety of modules. This past summer I took part in the Criminology and Criminal Justice module.

During the course we learned the core elements of crime starting from its understanding and moving on to analysing the major crime categories and finally discussing the criminal justice system. The course was organised in a interactive way: it was the tutor and the students – sometimes in groups- who held the lecture. It was very surprising to see how interactive participation can make the lecture not only more interesting, but also more efficient in terms of learning outcomes.

In this course I gained a comparative perspective of crime control and punishment in different countries. I believe that this is crucial for someone that –like me- is a law student, because in law courses the study of criminal law usually neglects a comparative view as it tends to focus on national law only. Moreover, as this course gives a solid understanding of criminology, it is also a tool that law students can use in order to better integrate and understand the criminal law and the criminal justice system.pre-uni (2)

As part of the course, we also went to some field trips. For example, we visited the Criminal Court and the Police Museum. These experiences helped us better understand the main issues in sentencing and policing.

Furthermore, the city of London was a very inspiring environment as it provides students – especially law students- with the possibility to visit the legal area, including the Royal Courts of Justice all within a very short walking distance from the campus. Not to mention the beautiful Maughan Library that was just the perfect place to study and meet other students.

pre-uni (4)Living in London for three weeks also meant living in a multicultural and vibrant city and King’s social programme combined city tours and events with the possibility of meeting new people. This is how I got to know most of the friends I made especially my Instahunt group.

It was culturally and personally enriching to meet students from different backgrounds and share this experience with them. Like myself, most of my friends were living in the student dorms and this made our friendship even stronger. Every day we walked together from the dorm to the campus and we shared meals, field trips and class projects.

By sharing those every day little things, I have learned a lot from my friends in terms of culture and diversity. In our friends group there are people that come from different countries, cultures, studies but we all shared something: our summer experience at King’s. Our connection was so special that I also met some of my friends after the programme came to an end and I still keep in touch with all of them!

I made the most of this summer both on a professional and personal level and I am really thankful for this experience.

Undergraduate Summer School 2017: Session One Highlights (Part Two)

Hello from everyone at the King’s College London Summer Programmes team. Today marks the end of the second week for our Session One Undergraduate Summer School students.

This week has been full of lots of exciting activities, both in and outside the classroom. We’ve held an Arts & Humanities, Law and Business careers panels- where professionals from those industries came in to speak to our students about their industry. Our Summer School promotional video has also been filming in and around campus, capturing students in the classroom and outside of it during their module excursions. And finally we’ve also had our Boat Party along the River Thames.

Undergraduate Summer School 2017: Session One Highlights (Part One)

Hello from everyone at the King’s College London Summer Programmes team. This week signalled the start of our Undergraduate Summer School, and believe us it’s been a busy one.

We’ve welcomed hundreds of students, held our very own Instagram style scavenger hunt and began the first week of classes. Here are just a few photo highlights from this week of the summer school.

Undergraduate Social Programme 2017

We are excited to announce the details of the Undergraduate Summer School Social Programme for this year. Our team works with the King’s College London Student Union to create a programme that give students the chance to explore London in their free time, whilst making friends from all around the world.

On the first day we are holding a new event for this summer. Our Instahunt is a free event to attend and is a great opportunity to meet new people, explore the city around campus and win prizes. Discover awesome locations around King’s and London, take a photo, upload to Instagram and possibly win a prize. Following on from the Instahunt is our welcome drinks at the Knights Templar, where you can grab a drink and a bite to eat, find out who the winners of the Instahunt are and mingle with fellow Summer Schools students.

Untitled design (2)We have a number of activities that take place during the weekends of the Summer School. For both sessions we have a Saturday day trip to Oxford and Windsor. Explore the beautiful architecture of the city, which is of course  home to the world famous Oxford University. If you wish to attend in Session One you can book your tickets here. Another full day trip we are holding for this summer is a trip to the fantastic Harry Potter Studio Tour. Explore Leavesden which the film series made it’s home for almost ten years. Take a walk along Diagon Alley, visit Privet Drive and (new for this year) explore the Forbidden Forest. Purchase your ticket for Session One here and Session Two here. Tickets for this event will sell fast so do get in quick.

For those interested in learning more about the city our London walking tours would be a great social programme activity for you. Our Session One walks, which are new for this year, are a Street Art Walking Tour and a Sherlock Holmes Walking Tour. In Session Two we are holding a set of fantastic tours, which were extremely popular with our students last year. The tours for this session are a Harry Potter Walking Tour and a Theatreland Walking Tour.

As well as weekend activities we also have a number of events taking place during the evenings that you can get involved in. Each session of the Summer School will have a Boat Party on the Thames. Take in the spectacular views as you cruise along the river, with sights such as Tower Bridge, Big Ben and the Shard making an appearance. For students wishing to attend in Session One please book here and Session Two students here.

In addition to this we have tickets to a number of different shows throughout the programme. For those interested in comedy, our night out to the Top Secret Comedy Club is a must see. If you’re interested in these events book your tickets for Session One or Session Two now. This year we are offering students tickets to a West End show and a performance at the Globe Theatre. Details for our West End shows are yet to be announced but you can purchase tickets to the shows at the Globe Theatre already. Session One students will be going to see Romeo & Juliet and Session Two students will be off to watch Much Ado About Nothing.

My Summer At King’s- Lucie Škopková

This year marked the second time that I have attended the King’s Pre-University Summer School. After last year being such a wonderful experience I could not resist to come back.

During this year’s programme I have been studying Politics. I have never before engaged myself in this subject, and so I was hoping that by the end I would gain a detailed insight and overview of the subject. My expectations regarding the subject were exceeded throughout the programme and I have left feeling confident about the course and with plenty of information I would be able to use when deciding about my future studies at university. The Politics course was based on interactive lectures with student-led discussions and various small in-class projects and presentations. These activities allowed us to develop in terms of teamwork, presentation skills, but most importantly made us feel as if we were studying the subject under university conditions. In addition to our lectures and in-class activities we have visited the Houses of Parliament and the Imperial War Museum. Both of these trips were interesting and very enjoyable additions to our chosen subject. Overall, the course has been very well balanced, which encouraged our enthusiasm to participate and enjoy the academic experience.

The Pre-University Summer Programme also comprised of a social side. The ambassadors have organised a few icebreaker events for us to be able to interact with students we may have not yet been able to come across.  Then there was the day trip to Leeds Castle and the closing boat party, which were both very relaxing and pleasant activities where we could have fun and spend more time together before the two weeks came to an end. During the two weeks we have lived in flats with assigned pastoral ambassadors. It was amazing to see that by the end of the programme the flats were more like small families who would gather every evening to discuss the day and just chat around. It was lovely to meet so many new and unique people from all around the world and get particularly close with the students from my flat who will remain very close friends, as the plans for our reunions are on the way and being constantly discussed.

King’s has opened its arms and welcomed me for the second time and allowed me to gain such an unforgettable experience one more time. Studying a university subject, receiving additional talks on ethics and university related aspects, meeting amazing people and being able to live in a vibrant city like London for two weeks has made me a more confident, open-minded and enthusiastic person for which I am overly thankful. The Pre-University Summer School has been an authentic, dynamic and memorable experience full of engaging events and extraordinary people. It has been a privilege to be able to spend these two weeks in such a special way.
