How can Careers & Employability help you?

Can you believe it’s Welcome Week for the 2018/19 academic year already? Whether you’re a new student (welcome to London, and to King’s!) or a returning student (welcome back!) our hope is that this blog post will give you a useful overview of what services we offer, and how we can help you across the academic year, whatever stage of career planning you’re at! We’re out and about around all of King’s campuses this week, at Welcome Week Hubs, the Welcome Fair, and at our own events – so if you see us, do come and say hello!

King’s CareerConnect
First things first, the most important thing; this is our online careers portal, which allows you to engage with all our services. Get yourself set up as soon as you can – the sooner you can do that, the sooner you can start using us! You should be automatically registered with your King’s ‘K’ number and network password 24 hours after your registration on campus. Don’t worry if it’s not working within this time period though – with over 20,000 students registering at King’s every year there’s always some brief technical teething problems for a few students. Take a look at our website for further information, including information on how to report any problems to us.

Appointments
We run three main types of appointments:

  • Application Advice appointments allow you to get your CV, cover letters and job applications checked by one of our Application Advisers.
  • Careers Guidance appointments can be used either as a starting point for your career planning, or to discuss a range of issues further into your search.
  • Practice Interviews can be booked once a term for you to practice for an upcoming interview

Find out more about our appointments and how to book on our website.

Events
We run events throughout the year, particularly during the Autumn term. There’s different types of events, including:

  • Discover Careers in….these events bring in speakers from a particular industry, and aim to give you an idea of what it’s like to work in that area, and how to get there.
  • Careers Fairs bring hundreds of employers, big and small, from dozens of sectors across a range of sectors together. Meet them face-to-face to talk through how you can refine your application and achieve success in your desired area, or simply to find out more about career options.
  • Future Advantage is a programme of group workshops aiming to cover your entire journey, whether you’re exploring potential careers or looking for interview tips. In the middle of Autumn Term, when appointments are booked up quickly, check out what’s going on with these instead!

We also run networking nights, careers cafes and employer promotions, along with others. Find out more on the events section of our website! And if you miss any of our events, it may have been recorded. Even if the one you’re looking for hasn’t, you may find something else of interest on our Event Recordings page on KEATS.

Online resources
You may already have an idea of what you’re interested in, but if you don’t then we have lots of places we can direct you towards to help you educate yourself about what’s available. The King’s Careers Hub on KEATS has stacks of useful careers information, with different tailored pages for you to navigate around depending on what stage of career planning you’re at, and King’s Career Kit has over 100 sector guides stored in one handy place.

King’s Internships
There’s three main parts to the King’s Internships offering:

While this list is already pretty lengthy, it still doesn’t feel like we’ve covered even half of what we do! So please do feel free to explore our website, or drop by and see us anytime if you’d like to ask us anything else about what we do.

We hope to see you soon!
