Student life at King’s

When I first joined King’s two years ago, what stood out to me the most was it’s incredibly vibrant atmosphere, a very multicultural environment full of excitement and new opportunities!

The social aspect of a university life is incredibly important, so we want to share with you the opportunities you can get involved in and the things you shouldn’t miss out on when you become part of this incredible community.

London Living

No day is never the same if you live and study in London. It is an environment that never stands still, with hidden treasures and new discoveries behind every corner.

Here are some things that can help you get a head start in this great city.

Take advantage of all the student discounts!:

This one seems obvious, but London is an incredibly student friendly city. Companies try to attract students wherever they can, so ask for a discount everywhere! You can get 20% off your daily shopping, restaurants, museum entrances and attractions.

We all know that keeping a budget in London can be difficult, so this is by far the easiest way to save on the little things.

Invest in a student Oyster card (and a student railcard for frequent travelers):

A student Oyster card gives you a 30% discount on all of your underground journeys, throughout your years at university that can amount to a very great savings sum! You just have to register online and confirm that you are a student at A London university.

The same applies to the National 16-25 rail card. Purchasing a 3-year membership saves you on all of the train rides around the UK, and makes organizing spontaneous weekend trips so much more fun

Think in advance about the location of your accommodation:

Think about your commute from your residence before you make the final trip to move in. When choosing, look at the best routes and the time it will take you to get to campus and other important locations. Set your priorities for price, comfort and commuting!

Facilities at King’s

Whether it is a pre-lecture coffee, a lunch or a chance to connect with like-minded students, King’s student bars and cafes have got you covered.

King’s student union has three awesome bars- The Vault and Philosophy Bar on Strand Campus and Guy’s Bar on Guy’s campus. They offer food and drink deals, karaoke, quiz nights and curry nights. The Guy’s Bar sport night are very popular with students even outside King’s, and the bars host themed parties, and dancing parties like Bachata and Salsa.

The bars have a huge range of food and great hot drinks. I personally always go there to socialize in breaks and do some group projects

There is also a Union Shop located at Strand campus which delivers to 170 countries worldwide to let you showcase your King’s pride! You can purchase branded clothes, stationary, gifts and accessories.

KCL SU

As a student at King’s, you are automatically a member of King’s College London Students’ Union (KCLSU). It is a union of students, run by students, for the students. KCLSU supports us through organizing social, sporting and cultural activities, providing opportunities to develop our skills, have our voices heard as well as receive the advice and guidance we need. No matter where your interest lies, there’ll be a club or society for you, whether it’s baking, Bhangra or bowling! There is something for everyone, you can hop into sports clubs, societies, volunteering opportunities, student media and campaigning groups. KCLSU is a good way to interact with students from different campuses and courses. It is a good way to gain experiences apart from just academics.

As a committee member of the KCL Fashion Society, I can confidently say that societies are fun. They are a good way to upgrade your resume and also bag new experiences. To get an idea of what a society does, KCL fashion society holds fashion related events such as photoshoots with different fashion themes, annual charity fashion show where interested student members get to model and walk down the ramp, socials and panel talks with up and coming designers. Events are held in such a way that even novices in fashion will be able to attend, learn and enjoy.

To find out about some of the phenomenal things King’s students have been up to, check out student news, KCLSU Radio and ROAR News, KCL’s multi-award winning student newspaper. You can also search #LifeAtKing’s on social media for more on what the SU has been up to.

Student life at King’s is amazing and there is something for everyone to enjoy. The community in general is very enthusiastic and understanding. Various opportunities for personal growth and development are available for students.
