Welcome to our postgraduate community

Congratulations on receiving an offer to study at King’s College London.

King’s is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, learning and understanding in the service of society, and in doing so we have an outstanding reputation for undertaking cutting-edge research.

We hope you will make use of the wealth of opportunities available to help you develop your personal and professional skills and experience.

As a postgraduate taught student at King’s you will not only be working with some of the world’s best academics, but you may have the opportunity to enhance your degree through study abroad schemes, volunteering, and internship programmes. You will also have access to the wide range of student support services offered by King’s, including careers and employment advice and Wellbeing support. Specialist individual assistance is available through the College’s personal tutor scheme. Your personal tutor will be an academic member of staff from your department and there will be opportunities to meet with them once you have enrolled.

As a postgraduate researcher in pursuit of your doctoral qualification you will receive specialist support from the Centre for Doctoral Studies. This university-wide professional services centre is responsible for ensuring all postgraduate research students are equipped to excel at King’s and beyond. The Centre for Doctoral Studies focuses on four key areas: Funding, Support, Training, and the PGR Community.

If you are keen to meet fellow postgraduates in a social setting, there will be a postgraduate student only party on Thursday 28th September 2017, which is organised through the Student Union and is open to all new and existing King’s postgraduate students. You will also have access to postgraduate-only social lounges and study spaces on each campus.

For doctoral research students, the Centre for Doctoral Studies will be hosting an induction session on Wednesday 27th September 2017. This event aims to welcome all new research students to the postgraduate community and help them settle into life at King’s while giving an overview of doctoral research matters across the university.

Make Connections. Create Change: KCL Alumni Mentoring Programme

The King’s Alumni Mentoring Programme connects students with alumni worldwide.

Alumni can provide career advice, professional insights and support to students from all Faculties and at all levels of their degrees. In the past, through their mentoring relationships with alumni, student have received hours of interview practice, CV advice, work shadowing experiences and more.

Through the online platform King’s Connect, students can search for alumni and connect with them straight away.

KCL Alumni Connect

Using King’s Connect is simple:

  1. Visit kcl.ac.uk/mentoring and complete registration.
  2. Create a user profile on King’s Connect that includes your photo, biography and personal information.
  3. Search for mentors from around the world who meet your criteria and begin connecting by sending them a mentoring request.

Alumni and students at all levels and stages of their degree are able to register for King’s Connect. Registration is open year-round, and both mentors and mentees are invited to an exclusive series of mentoring events, giving you the opportunity to connect with alumni mentors in person.

The Centre for Doctoral Studies: New name, same world-class support.

King’s College London’s Graduate School has changed its name. It is now called the Centre for Doctoral Studies and will focus entirely on the specific needs and lifecycle of postgraduate research students.

The Centre for Doctoral Studies will continue to offer PGR students the same world-class support for research standards, funding and scholarships, training, skills development, and guidance as before. However, as our focus and responsibility shifts towards research, we will be renewing efforts to provide outstanding postgraduate research student experience to equip research students to excel.

So what is changing?

Our new name: the Centre for Doctoral Studies

The Graduate School is now called the Centre for Doctoral Studies and is located under the administrative umbrella of the Research Management & Innovation directorate. We will also work alongside the Centre for Research Staff Development,

Focus on postgraduate research

From this Autumn, the Centre for Doctoral Studies will focus solely on postgraduate research students. Postgraduate taught provision will be coordinated through the Students & Education directorate, with continued academic leadership from Prof Kim Wolff

New leadership

The new academic lead for the Centre of Doctoral studies will soon be appointed. They will be working closely with the Heads of Graduate Studies in each faculty to ensure the continued world-class standard of postgraduate research at King’s
