I’m Lara, a Liberal Arts student about to go into the second semester of my second year at King’s! At the end of last year, I decided to major in English, but along with this, I am also taking modules in both History of Art, Classics, and the core Liberal Arts modules. One of the main things I have learnt from being a Liberal Arts student is that everything seems to be connected across many different fields of study. The interdisciplinary nature of Liberal Arts has illuminated the intricate relationships and interdependencies among various subjects, encouraging a more holistic understanding of knowledge. Transitioning from a Liberal Arts seminar centred on Robots and Cyborgs to an Art History session delving into the concept of the Black Magus, and discovering analogous ideas in both, is an intellectually captivating experience!
Since studying Liberal Arts, another incredibly important thing I have learned is that I am capable of far more than I could’ve imagined! Up to this point in my studies, I have written essays on a vast variety of topics and disciplines from Politics to Art History, to Literary Theory. If you tried to explain to me the concepts of Literary Theory I have written about extensively over the past year before I began studying at KCL, I never would’ve believed you! Liberal Arts has taught me not only how most fields of study in the Arts and Humanities intertwined, but that I am also proficient in understanding and writing lots about them!
By doing the readings, writing essays, and pursuing projects for my modules, I have acknowledged that not only can I understand the challenging concepts I’m being taught, but I can also contribute to the field. There is always space in Liberal Arts to ask questions, apply your own opinions, and develop the unique discussions had every single day. When it comes to the humanities, time is incredibly cyclical and not linear. Progression doesn’t happen without discussions about the past. We are always looking back in order to push forward!
Last but not least, through my experiences, it has become evident that selecting London as the location for pursuing a Liberal Arts course has been an optimal choice! The city has offered an exceptionally diverse array of voices, each contributing a multitude of opinions and experiences to our academic pursuits. Additionally, the opportunity to embark on frequent field trips to venues such as art museums and theatres has played a pivotal role in expanding our intellectual horizons.
If you decide to study Liberal Arts at King’s, you’ll assuredly learn a lot about not only the world but also yourself and your capabilities!
