I wanted to share my experience working as an Inclusive Careers Project Officer on the 2022 to 2023 Inclusive Careers Education Ambassador programme and hopefully inspire you to apply for the Inclusive Careers Project Officer role before April 2nd, 2023!

King’s Careers & Employability is currently hiring an Inclusive Careers Project Officer for the  2023 to 2024 Inclusive Careers Education Ambassador programme. The Inclusive Careers Education Ambassador programme began in 2021 when ten students in the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences (NMES) were recruited to be Inclusive Careers Education Ambassadors (ICEAs). An Inclusive Careers Project Officer was also recruited to support management of the ICEAs activities. The aim of this programme was to co-create careers education for NMES students which draws from an understanding of lived experiences of marginalisation such as ethnicity, disability and gender. Many students from underrepresented backgrounds face discrimination while navigating their career journey which the ICEA programme aims to combat.

The Inclusive Careers Project Officer has a key role in supporting the Inclusive Careers Education Ambassador programme. The ICPO assists with each stage of the programme, from planning to evaluation. The responsibilities of the ICPO include training and support the ICEAs; planning events, workshops and projects with the ICEAs; marketing events and communicating with students; updating the NMES Careers KEATS page; drafting newsletter introductions; attending meetings with colleagues and stakeholders; evaluating the programme and more. There is a wide range of tasks you will do as an ICPO which will provide you with a great opportunity to build a number of key skills including project management, interpersonal skills, data analysis and more.

As the Inclusive Careers Project Officer, I have found the role very rewarding. I have had the opportunity to gain significant experience in an administrative role, which will serve me well for any career I go into in the future. I have developed skills in areas which I had little experience with beforehand, such as creating marketing material for events or using Excel to analyse large sets of data. As an ICPO, I also found my role to be really satisfying as I was able to see the project through from the beginning of the year till the end and evaluate the impact of this project. I did all this in a very supportive environment within the King’s Careers team.
