Opportunity Highlight: HarperCollins’ Author Academy

 

If you have a story to tell but think voices like yours aren’t heard, HarperCollinsUK has opened applications to their free-to-attend Author Academy Spring 2023 for writers from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds, with an aim of helping motivated and dedicated writers to become commercially successful in the publishing industry. They are delivering an expert programme that will give writers knowledge of the entire end-to-end publishing process, and the tools required to write captivating stories. 

Applications are now open for the Spring 2023 term. Applicants will be selected based on samples of their work, assessed by a panel of HarperCollins experts. The application closing date is November 25, 2022. The courses will start the week of 23rd of January 2023, running remotely for six weeks, with weekly live-streamed tutorials and access to other course materials. Details for the Author Academy is as follows: 

  • The Author Academy offers three courses, covering three different genres: Fiction, Non-fiction, and Writing for Children. 
  • Motivated writers and budding authors can apply for one of the Academy’s limited 45 places in January 2023 split into three live teaching streams as shown below: 
    • Fifteen places in the Writing Fiction Course, which runs every Thursday, 10.00 – 12.00
    • Fifteen places in the Writing Nonfiction Course, which runs every Thursday, 13.00 – 15.00 
    • Fifteen places in the Writing for Children Course which runs every Wednesday, 10.00 – 12.00 
  • 15x 60 minutes Publishing Masterclasses 
  • 4x 120 minutes Tutorials – Two open sessions with guest author speakers such as Sarah Morgan, Rachel Edwards, Charles Cummings, Smriti Halls and more.  

In addition, students will have access to supporting resources, a mentor, will receive a certificate, and go on to be part of the Academy’s Alumni network, with benefits including the right to submit book proposals direct to HarperCollins for review for publication!
