Starting today, it is Sustainability Week at King’s! This week is all about empowering you to make small changes that will have a big impact on the world. From the 11th to the 15th of February, King’s has planned a range of activities. These include zero waste beauty workshops, wellbeing sessions and a vegan bake sale. You can see the full timetable here.
So how can we make the world a better place?
Inspired by the Sustainability Week timetable of activities, you can start implementing some of these key messages into your own life. Here are a few to get you started:
Shop smart
All week there will be a charity clothes sale taking place in the Language Resources Centre. The proceeds from this sale will be going to Trees for Cities, a tree planting, protecting and promoting charity based in the UK. The fashion industry is one the largest polluting industries in the world but by shopping smarter, either buying second-hand items or simply purchasing new clothing less often, you can help to reduce the impact that fast fashion is having on our environment.
Reduce your travel emissions
Although London can sometimes be a nightmare to navigate on the tubes and buses, the most sustainable way to get around the city is by bike or foot. You could even shorten your journey by getting in the bike lane rather than sitting in traffic around Waterloo Bridge every morning. Throughout the week, King’s are hosting workshops with Dr Bike so that you can get your bike checked, fixed and ready to ride!
Eat plant-based
By simply reducing your meat and dairy intake, you can start to reduce your environmental impact on the planet. Veganuary has been great for promoting the plant-based diet, but if you don’t think you are quite ready to jump straight into veganism, you can start small by doing Meatless Monday or switching your regular milk for a plant-based alternative. The new vegan café in Bush House is also a great place to start if you want to give plant-based food a try. However, you can also look up an abundance of recipes online that will show you how easy and cheap making vegan food can be!
Keep an eye out for Sustainability Week activities across all campuses this week and help to make our planet a better place!
