The internet has revolutionised the job application process, enabling individuals to conveniently apply for jobs from their homes. However, it has also granted employers easy access to investigate potential candidates’ private lives to determine their suitability for a position. While the ethics of social media screening are being closely examined, it remains essential for job seekers to thoroughly assess their online presence during their search for employment. So, what steps should you be undertaking to ensure that your online presence doesn’t hinder your chances at landing that job?

  1. Google yourself
Your employer is likely to come across the same information you find when you Google yourself. This initial step of reviewing your online presence helps you gauge what details about you are publicly accessible and enables you to take necessary actions to address any concerns.
  2. Review social media profiles
Examine all your social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.). Ensure your privacy settings are appropriately configured and be mindful of the content you’ve shared. Delete any posts or pictures that may be considered unprofessional or could be perceived negatively by potential employers.
  3. Cultivate a positive digital footprint
LinkedIn is a crucial platform for professional networking and job hunting. Make sure your profile is up to date, showcases your skills and experiences, and aligns with the kind of job you’re seeking
  4. Assess your email address
Don’t use that email address you made when you were 12! Your email address is often the first point of contact for employers, and it speaks volumes about your professionalism and attention to detail. Whenever possible, opt for simplicity and use your name as your email address.

The goal of reviewing your online presence is to create a positive image of yourself. Whilst it’s important to clean up any questionable content, you should also take the chance to showcase your skills and expertise.
