Dr Sophie Stevens is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Language Acts and Worldmaking in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies; she is a researcher, theatre translator and practitioner. Sophie completed her PhD on Uruguayan theatre in translation at King’s College London and this forms the basis of her forthcoming book, Uruguayan Theatre in Translation: Theory and Practice, published by Legenda. After her PhD, she worked at the University of Warwick where she developed an innovative translation programme for Modern Languages students. She returned to King’s in 2017 as Research Associate on the Translation Acts Strand of the AHRC-funded Language Acts and Worldmaking project where she is investigating female dramatists and performers from Uruguay and how, through their work, they act as agents of cultural change. She is a member of the Out of the Wings theatre collective and has collaborated with CASA Festival, Blackboard Theatre and Arcola Youth Theatre. Her translations have been presented at The Cervantes Theatre and Southwark Playhouse.

The Out of the Wings collective grew out of the work of the AHRC-funded Out of the Wings project. The collective includes translators, academics, theatre practitioners, actors and directors who meet monthly to read and discuss a play in translation. It holds an annual festival showcasing significant work from the Hispanic and Lusophone world in English translation in the form of a week of rehearsed readings alongside workshops, talks and a one-day conference. This is the fourth time the festival has happened and this year it will be at the Omnibus Theatre in Clapham https://ootwfestival.com/
A series of collaborations between Translation Acts and PsycheDelight theatre company on theatre workshops and a 2-day workshop for translators and interpreters, Languages at Times of Crisis, which used dramatic techniques and artistic practice to explore their experience.
