Michael Salmon is Associate Director \u2013 Curriculum Renewal for Summer Programmes at King\u2019s College London.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

King\u2019s Pre-University Summer School is one of the most popular international programmes of its kind<\/span>, giving students from around the world in the last two years of high school the opportunity to experience King\u2019s teaching in the subject area of their choice.\u00a0<\/span>But how about for those students still exploring their options, looking for a broader introduction to university study at an earlier point in their journey?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mindful o<\/span>f this growing glob<\/span>al<\/span>\u00a0need<\/span>\u00a0among young people<\/span>\u00a0for enhanced decision-making opportunities, i<\/span>n February 2021 King\u2019s Summer Programmes launched\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0Pre-University Winter School. This innovative one-week study programme allowed students<\/span>\u00a0from 20 countries<\/span>\u00a0to sample a range of subject a<\/span>reas under the guidance of talented King\u2019s academics, all from the comfort of their own homes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to highly engaging lectures and seminars, participants also conn<\/span>ected with current King\u2019s students and worked independently on\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>project.\u00a0<\/span>Feedback received so far has been excellent, with\u00a0<\/span>an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 and every student agreeing that they would recommend the course to others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Gongning<\/span> from China, who studied on the Law, Politics & Social Science pathway, summed the experience up as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span>I was inspired by <\/span>the tutors’<\/span> passion for teaching and respect for everybody’s perspective. I really felt listened <\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>in every class discussion.” <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Paula from Spain, who followed the Health & Science course,\u00a0<\/span>also praised the dynamic teaching and the quality of the course\u00a0<\/span>content,\u00a0<\/span>add<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0that the course<\/span>\u00a0has\u00a0<\/span>reinforced her enthusiasm for\u00a0<\/span>\u2018delv<\/span>ing\u00a0<\/span>deeper into university-level material<\/span>\u2019<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0This positive feedback was very heartening, as\u00a0chall<\/span>enging and stimulating learning experiences in a respectful, supportive atmosphere are what we hope\u00a0<\/span>characterise<\/span>\u00a0our pre-university courses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For the academic staff involved, connecting with talented pre-university students can be a hugely enriching experience:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
