On Thursday 9 May 2024, the DCRN held its first community engagement event to do just that\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4568 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/socialcareworkforce\/files\/2024\/05\/Picture1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"321\" height=\"216\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The DCRN is a network of public, community, and research partners from across South London. We are connected though our shared goal of better care for all people affected by dementia, by giving equitable opportunities to people of all backgrounds and ethnicities to be involved in dementia research.<\/p>\n<p>With thanks to generous funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishgerontology.org\/\">British Society of Gerontology<\/a>, and hosting by King\u2019s College Hospital, we welcomed well over 50 guests to our event, including people living with dementia and their relatives, community staff from the voluntary sector, clinical and managerial staff from the NHS and dementia care researchers.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4569 aligncenter\" amazing work of different voluntary services providing support to people affected by dementia in the community, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/support-services\/Lewisham%20Local%20Services\/Lewisham%20Dementia%20Support\/regional\">Alzheimer\u2019s Society Lewisham<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ageuk.org.uk\/lewishamandsouthwark\/\">Age UK Lewisham and Southwark<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/artsfordementia.org\/\">Arts 4 Dementia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homeinstead.co.uk\/\">HomeInstead<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.froglife.org\/\">Froglife<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Guests could also learn about different research projects on dementia care undertaken at King\u2019s College London and University College London, including work on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/research\/setting-and-responding-to-priorities-sarp\">Day Centres<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/research\/spiritdem\">Spiritual care in Care Homes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/research\/embed-care\">the EMBED-Care project<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/epidemiology-health-care\/sites\/epidemiology_health_care\/files\/pridem_report_for_practitioners_and_commissioners.pdf\">PriDem project<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/kclpure.kcl.ac.uk\/portal\/en\/publications\/a-right-to-be-heard-better-palliative-and-end-of-life-care-for-pe\">A Right to Be Heard<\/a> policy brief, and the Science Gallery exhibition, <a href=\"https:\/\/london.sciencegallery.com\/sgl-events\/dementia-journeys\">Dementia Journeys<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There was opportunity for guests to learn about how to get involved with research from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joindementiaresearch.nihr.ac.uk\/\">Join Dementia Research<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csipublicinvolvement.co.uk\/\">Cicely Saunders Institute Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) forum.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4570 aligncenter\" style=\"margin-top: 0.4em\" accordionist, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alistairsutherland.com\/\">Alistair Sutherland<\/a>, and poetry from public members, including that from DCRN member, Margaret Ogden:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>An invite to write verse for the DCRN event<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>A golden opportunity, that was heaven sent<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>The topic \u2013 dementia in those from an ethnic background<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Who are too often not heard, that\u2019s what we\u2019ve found<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Our aim \u2013 to create a safe and engaging space<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Is one of the challenges we had to face<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Openings for training and knowledge exchange<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Are further objectives, we have covered a range<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Not forgetting that researchers had a crucial part to play<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>In making sure PPI members conversations around how we can improve dementia care by ensuring support for people from all ethnic backgrounds to be involved in dementia research. For those from minoritised ethnic communities, the number of people with dementia is expected to increase <em>seven times<\/em> by 2040. Research can help to improve access to dementia services and the quality of dementia care, but opportunities for people from minoritised ethnic communities to be involved in research are lacking.
