This module will introduce students to the disciplines of epidemiology and statistics and examine how they inform our understanding of population health. The burden of disease in a global context will be considered. Sources of data, information and knowledge in relation to health will be discussed, together with how statistics can summarise and communicate data. An integrated approach to understanding epidemiology and statistic will be illustrated through the discussion of key epidemiological research designs and analysis. It will explore the role of epidemiological methods in public health. The module will also introduce biostatistical methods for the design and analysis of epidemiological studies in a public health context. Epidemiological study designs to estimates health risks and evaluate prognosis will be discussed. Key statistical principles and methods and their application in design, analysing and interpreting epidemiological studies will be considered.

The module is led by Professor Janet Peacock and Professor Martin Gulliford.
