Hey everyone, thanks for reading his blog post! I wanted to share a few unconventional tips to help you hit the ground running in your first months on the job. Most come from my own experience, I work in Networks and DevOps, as one of two women in a team of 70 and part of the first-ever intern cohort on the project, so take what resonates and leave the rest.

Stay Vigilant Attention is its own kind of currency. In your first few weeks, skip the headphones, keep your body language open, and make yourself easy to talk to. When conversations do come your way, hold onto the small details, remembering someone’s name or a snippet from a previous chat goes a long way.

Proximity If you can choose your seat in an open office, position yourself beside or in front of your manager. You’ll find yourself more focused, and you’ll gain organic face time, a window into their day-to-day and perhaps even the chance to get involved in work that genuinely interests you.

There’s No Such Thing as a ‘Bad Person’ You’ll cross paths with all kinds of personalities, someone very different from your usual circle, or a fellow intern who’s made everything a competition. In those moments, challenge yourself to find one or two qualities you genuinely respect in that person. Shifting your perspective, even slightly, softens your attitude toward them, and often, they’ll mirror that energy back. Everyone wants to feel seen and respected, and it usually doesn’t take long for someone to notice when they’re not bringing their best self to the table.

Good luck!

By Dilara Mukasheva, Computer Science BSc student.
