Avoid cringe clich\u00e9s like \u201cMaths is the language of the universe\u201d or \u201cSince I was 2, I always loved maths\u201d (you know this is completely untrue). Instead reflect on your own experience. You probably know exactly why. Perhaps it\u2019s the adrenaline rush from solving tough problems, or your love for proving results. Maybe it\u2019s the real-world applications of maths, or the sense of reward after cracking a difficult problem.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Follow your motivation with super curricular experiences that inspired your further. These are academic activities that go beyond the syllabus (I have made a list at the end of this post).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW51136367 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW51136367 BCX0\">Here are some examples:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW51136367 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\">\u201cAt A-level I was fascinated by complex numbers. I was amazed at how introducing <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\">I <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\">can <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\">facilitate<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\"> rotation. Inspired, I watched a video by <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW42815199 BCX0\">Veritasium<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\"> on how complex <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\">numbers are related to the wave equation due to Euler\u2019s formula. I am intrigued by <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\">results like the fundamental theorem of algebra, and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\">I\u2019d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\"> like to learn how to <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\">prove<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\">suc<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42815199 BCX0\">h powerful results at university.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW42815199 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cProbability was my favourite module. This led me to read probability at university level, through the book \u201cUnderstanding Probability\u201d by Henk Tijms. It gave me an insight into building probability from first principles and axioms. I recently proved the Birthday, and St Petersburg paradoxes. I am eager to study probability at a higher level.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cStudying linear algebra at A-level amazed me. Learning about vectors and their ability to compute areas of parallelograms or shortest distances in R3 was exciting. To challenge myself, I worked through Richard Earl\u2019s Oxford notes and practiced Gauss-Jordan elimination. A STEP question I tackled (2022, Paper 3) led me to derive the Rodriguez rotation formula, which I thoroughly enjoyed.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW54254087 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW54254087 BCX0\">\u201cStudying differential equations made me <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW54254087 BCX0\">realise<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW54254087 BCX0\"> how useful they are. Researching <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW54254087 BCX0\">further, I read a Khan Academy article on how the logistic curve can model<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW54254087 BCX0\">populations in Biology. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW54254087 BCX0\">I\u2019d<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW54254087 BCX0\"> love to learn more about such applications at university.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW54254087 BCX0\">\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW54254087 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Notice how these are highly technical. I recall a Cambridge professor saying \u201cyour peer shouldn\u2019t fully understand the maths in your personal statement\u201d. Obviously, make sure you know what you are talking about. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Finally, now is also a good time to include any future career plans and how maths fits in.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI aim to work in quantitative finance, where I can apply mathematical models to real-world problems. Studying mathematics at university is the first step toward achieving this goal.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How have your qualifications and studies helped prepare you for <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mathematics?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW145606399 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW145606399 BCX0\">Talk about your A-levels or equivalent qualification. This should be your <strong>shortest<\/strong> section. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW145606399 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW41660064 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW41660064 BCX0\">\u201cThrough my A-levels in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW41660064 BCX0\">maths<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW41660064 BCX0\"> and further <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW41660064 BCX0\">maths<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW41660064 BCX0\">, I discovered how abstract concepts<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW41660064 BCX0\">model real-world events. For example, calculus governs phenomena ranging from <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW41660064 BCX0\">motion to economics. Physics cemented this belief, as I often went beyond the syllabus <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW41660064 BCX0\">to mathematically prove results, like formulae for simple harmonic motion. Recently, I <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW41660064 BCX0\">used differential equations to solve problems on radioactive decay.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW41660064 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW174371511 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW174371511 BCX0\">If applicable, mention any <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW174371511 BCX0\">additional<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW174371511 BCX0\"> qualifications or achievements.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW194785350 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW194785350 BCX0\">\u201cTo challenge myself further, I am preparing for the STEP exams.
