Writing a personal statement that catches the attention of top universities is no easy task. Yet, <\/span>mine led to offers from Cambridge, Warwick, UCL, and King\u2019s College London. It <\/span>wasn\u2019t<\/span> luck or magic\u2014it was all about strategy, thorough research, and attending Oxbridge<\/span> webinars.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019m<\/span> Aadi, a first-year <\/span>maths<\/span> student at King\u2019s, and in this guide, <\/span>I\u2019ll<\/span> share<\/span> everything <\/span>I\u2019ve<\/span> learned to help you craft a standout personal statement. Whether <\/span>you\u2019re<\/span> aiming for Kings, or another leading university, consider this your ultimate roadmap.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The New UCAS Changes<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

UCAS now asks you to respond to the following questions:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Why do you want to study this course or subject?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. How have your qualifications and studies helped you prepare for this course or <\/span>subject?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these<\/span> experiences helpful?<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Why do you want to study Mathematics?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

    Think from the perspective of an admissions offer. They are looking for students who:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Have tackled challenging concepts<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Enjoy proof (a major part of university <\/span>maths<\/span>)<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Are powered by curiosity to research further into a topic of their interest<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The answer to this question must be unique. Avoid cringe clich\u00e9s like \u201cMaths is the language of the universe\u201d or \u201cSince I was 2, I always loved maths\u201d (you know this is completely untrue). Instead reflect on your own experience. You probably know exactly why. Perhaps it\u2019s the adrenaline rush from solving tough problems, or your love for proving results. Maybe it\u2019s the real-world applications of maths, or the sense of reward after cracking a difficult problem.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Follow your motivation with super curricular experiences that inspired your further. These are academic activities that go beyond the syllabus (I have made a list at the end of this post).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Here are some examples:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      \u201cAt A-level I was fascinated by complex numbers. I was amazed at how introducing <\/span>I <\/span>can <\/span>facilitate<\/span> rotation. Inspired, I watched a video by <\/span>Veritasium<\/span> on how complex <\/span>numbers are related to the wave equation due to Euler\u2019s formula. I am intrigued by <\/span>results like the fundamental theorem of algebra, and <\/span>I\u2019d<\/span> like to learn how to <\/span>prove<\/span> suc<\/span>h powerful results at university.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

      \u201cProbability was my favourite module. This led me to read probability at university level, through the book \u201cUnderstanding Probability\u201d by Henk Tijms. It gave me an insight into building probability from first principles and axioms. I recently proved the Birthday, and St Petersburg paradoxes. I am eager to study probability at a higher level.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

      \u201cStudying linear algebra at A-level amazed me. Learning about vectors and their ability to compute areas of parallelograms or shortest distances in R3 was exciting. To challenge myself, I worked through Richard Earl\u2019s Oxford notes and practiced Gauss-Jordan elimination. A STEP question I tackled (2022, Paper 3) led me to derive the Rodriguez rotation formula, which I thoroughly enjoyed.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

      \u201cStudying differential equations made me <\/span>realise<\/span> how useful they are. Researching <\/span>further, I read a Khan Academy article on how the logistic curve can model<\/span> populations in Biology. <\/span>I\u2019d<\/span> love to learn more about such applications at university.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

      Notice how these are highly technical. I recall a Cambridge professor saying \u201cyour peer shouldn\u2019t fully understand the maths in your personal statement\u201d. Obviously, make sure you know what you are talking about. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Finally, now is also a good time to include any future career plans and how maths fits in.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      \u201cI aim to work in quantitative finance, where I can apply mathematical models to real-world problems. Studying mathematics at university is the first step toward achieving this goal.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

      How have your qualifications and studies helped prepare you for <\/span>mathematics?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

      Talk about your A-levels or equivalent qualification. This should be your shortest<\/strong> section. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      \u201cThrough my A-levels in <\/span>maths<\/span> and further <\/span>maths<\/span>, I discovered how abstract concepts<\/span> model real-world events. For example, calculus governs phenomena ranging from <\/span>motion to economics. Physics cemented this belief, as I often went beyond the syllabus <\/span>to mathematically prove results, like formulae for simple harmonic motion. Recently, I <\/span>used differential equations to solve problems on radioactive decay.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

      If applicable, mention any <\/span>additional<\/span> qualifications or achievements.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      \u201cTo challenge myself further, I am preparing for the STEP exams. I particularly enjoy <\/span>applying pure mathematical techniques to solve applied problems. As faculty<\/span> ambassador, I also worked closely with teachers, providing <\/span>feedback<\/span> and helping <\/span>organise events to promote <\/span>maths<\/span> among younger students. Additionally, I <\/span>participated in the <\/span>Maths<\/span> Olympiad, which honed my problem-solving skills.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

      Keep this section concise. <\/span>Don\u2019t<\/span> include your A-level grades. Admissions tutors are more<\/span> interested in your <\/span>supercurriculars<\/span>, as your academic qualifications are already listed <\/span>elsewhere in your application.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why <\/span>are<\/span> these experiences helpful?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

      This is where you can really stand out. Focus primarily on <\/span>supercurriculars<\/span>\u2014activities that <\/span>demonstrate a passion for mathematics beyond formal education.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        5. Participate in competitions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Make sure to include what this experience taught you, and how it will make you a great <\/span>candidate:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

          \u201cI tutored GCSE <\/span>maths<\/span> students, which taught me how to communicate complex ideas <\/span>in simpler terms. This experience reinforced my understanding of fundamental <\/span>concepts and helped me appreciate the importance of clear reasoning in <\/span>mathematics.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

          While less important to top universities, extracurriculars (music, sport, etc.) can add <\/span>personality to your application.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

          This is exactly how to craft a personal statement for top universities. By focusing on your<\/span> passion for mathematics, highlighting your <\/span>supercurricular<\/span> activities, and <\/span>demonstrating<\/span> a<\/span> commitment to academic excellence, you can create a compelling narrative that sets you<\/span> apart.
