Sons, Ltd, using previously published French photographs.\u00a0 The first, showing V<span>\u00e9<\/span>drines about to depart on a reconnaissance flight, appeared in French magazine, <em>Le<\/em> <em>Miroir<\/em>, 8 November 1914.\u00a0 The second purports to show him giving his report after a flight.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong>Why<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Right Stuff: 35 years before Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier, V<span>\u00e9<\/span>drines was the first person to fly at more than 100mph, in 1912.\u00a0 The year before, he won the Paris-Madrid air race.\u00a0 Unlike many early aviators he was from a working class background, and was a mechanic when he gained his pilot\u2019s licence in 1910.\u00a0 He was a huge celebrity by 1914, with a canny knack for publicity \u2013 as shown by his personalised plane, La Vache (\u2018The Cow\u2019).\u00a0 He survived flying thousands of hours of reconnaissance during the war, but died in a plane crash in 1919.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Ref: Liddell Hart 15\/2\/68<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kingscollections.org\/catalogues\/lhcma\/collection\/l\/li30-001\">www.kingscollections.org\/catalogues\/lhcma\/collection\/l\/li30-001<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Selected by Kate O&#8217;Brien, Archives Services Manager\u00a0 What Two propaganda postcards featuring the celebrated French aviator Jules V\u00e9drines (1881-1919).\u00a0 Both were printed in the UK by William Ritchie &amp;
