What
A dinner menu from Captain Graeme Wynne’s internment as a Prisoner of War in Heidelberg, Germany, December 1917. Wynne was captured by German forces during the Battle of Le Cateau, France on 26 August 1914. He remained a POW until November 1918. The watercolour on the front cover is a representation of the Heidelberg camp by Wynne, illustrating barbed wire, a guard, and a sentry box.
Why
This menu is a particular favourite of mine as the image and watercolour is so vivid. It provides an interesting insight into Wynne’s confinement as a POW, and it also illustrates how the unique circumstances of war meant that Christmas might be experienced and celebrated in a wide variety of ways.
