Why You Should Definitely Attend Legal Week ⚖️

It’s that time of the year again! Legal Week is upon us!

Between the 16th and 20th of October, a variety of events, workshops and sessions connected to all things ‘law’ will be taking place across the Strand campus. The programme line up is impressive with events ranging from fascinating talks such as “Will Robots Replace Lawyers?”, to advice sessions about different areas of legal practice and ‘Careers Cafés’ where you get to join representatives from renowned law firms for a coffee and a chat about opportunities at their firm. Several of the speakers present throughout the week are also King’s alumni, which makes listening to their talks all the  more interesting and relevant.

Despite all the excitement and inside knowledge Legal Week promises, you may still be wondering whether you should attend any of the events. Well, I’m here to tell you all the reasons why you should definitely take part in any or all of the events which interest you!

If you are studying law…

  • Legal Week is THE perfect opportunity to learn more about the realities of the legal profession, the differences between the work of a solicitor and a barrister, and the subtle but ever so important distinctions between law firms.
  • If you are not yet sure whether you would like to pursue law as a career after your LLB, this is your chance to find out whether you could imagine yourself in the legal profession by attending informational presentations, the ‘Career Cafés’ and the ‘Meet the Trainees’ events where you can talk to people who did choose law as a career.
  • As you know, competition amongst graduates wanting to establish themselves in the legal field is fierce. If you are set on securing a training contract or a pupillage, the knowledge and skills you will gather during the week will give you a competitive edge once the time of application comes!

If you are not a law student but would like to ‘become a lawyer’…

  • I don’t even have to tell you that if you’re studying a degree in a subject other than law, but would like to pursue a legal career after, Legal Week is not to be missed! This is your best chance of finding out about how to get into the legal profession with a non-law background and is a great opportunity to ask questions to King’s alumni who went down the same route you are about to embark on.

Legal Week is an excellent opportunity for both law students and those in other departments to learn more about law as a profession and what it really means to be a lawyer. The networking opportunities are your chance to make valuable contacts and get your questions answered directly from people working in the field. Not to mention that some of the talks are just plain fascinating for anyone interested in the topic, so do come along even if you are not considering a future in law!

All further details can be found on King’s CareerConnect where you can also sign up for each individual event happening that week!

There is also a guide to Legal Week 2017 which provides a timetable and a description of each session.

Lastly, don’t forget that the Law Fair is taking place on October 24-26, which is an extension of Legal Week giving you the opportunity to meet an even greater number of employers!

See you there!
