Part-time Freelance Translators/French to English/Science & Technology

We are a UK based international publisher of Science and Technology research based materials.  Currently we publish 100 titles (books) annually with our co-publishing partner John Wiley & Sons.  ISTE is the number one independent UK and mainland Europe publisher in our sector.


Job description/duties:

To translate from French to Modern English previously published French texts or, new manuscripts written in French.  We now require translators with experience in the following subjects: Digital Signal Processing, Geographical Information Systems, IT/Computer Science, Life Sciences (Biology) and Networks & Telecommunications. 

To communicate confidently and fluently with authors in French (spoken and written).  Provide regular reports on progress of projects to ISTE.

Person specification:

In the process of completing MA or PhD in science and technology; Good written and oral communication skills in French and Modern English;


Experience: Work experience in translating or working within a science/technology research environment would be desirable.  IT skills essential especially of Word and able to format would be desirable.  Experience of LaTeX, Photoshop and Illustrator would be desirable.

Personal qualities: Time management skills to keep scheduled dates and prioritise work are essential; Act on own initiative but also be part of a team are essential; be flexible and able to work under pressure are essential; Interpersonal and communication skills especially in conversing with authors who will be Professors of faculties or research companies, Laboratory technicians or top consultants to companies or government departments.

Part-time freelance. Perfect for students looking for completely flexible working hours to fit around study and other commitments.

Salary parameters and contract:

£2100.00-£5040.00 per project subject to negotiation depending on project length and complexity.  This equates to an hourly rate of approx. £30 to £40 on translating approx. five pages per hour. 

No interview necessary.  Suitable applicants will be given a sample translation test to verify the quality of their linguistic ability.

Start date:

When applicants have passed our test and signed a contract to translate a chosen project.
