Figuring out how to pay for your degree and manage your finances? Not so exciting\u2026despite having the word \u2018fun\u2019 in funding.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:post-content -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Solving the puzzle that is financing your degree and living expenses can be pretty confusing, but never fear! There are a number of ways you can do this, and hopefully this blog will make it a bit less confusing.<\/p>\r\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\r\n<h4><strong>Funding<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Funding your degree looks different for everybody.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www1.kcl.ac.uk\/graduate\/funding\/database\/\"><strong>The postgraduate funding database<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is a handy tool provided by King\u2019s for finding relevant funding opportunities; you can input details such as your type of study and country of domicile to personally tailor the results.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"center\",\"id\":741,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} -->\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" class=\"wp-image-741\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/ioppn-students\/files\/2020\/01\/money-2696219_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/ioppn-students\/files\/2020\/01\/money-2696219_960_720.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/ioppn-students\/files\/2020\/01\/money-2696219_960_720-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/ioppn-students\/files\/2020\/01\/money-2696219_960_720-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>If you are a UK\/EU student, you may be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/masters-loan\/eligibility\">eligible<\/a>\u00a0for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/study\/postgraduate\/fees-and-funding\/student-funding\/postgraduate-taught-funding\/2019-20\/postgraduate-masters-loan\"><strong>UK postgraduate loan<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0of up to \u00a310,906, through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/funding-for-postgraduate-study\">student finance<\/a>, to help with course fees and living costs. You can find out more about the loan, including extra help for disabilities, how to apply and how the loan is paid back\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/masters-loan\">here<\/a>. Students may also qualify for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/study\/postgraduate\/fees-and-funding\/student-funding\/postgraduate-taught-funding\/index2\"><strong>bursaries and scholarships<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>available at King\u2019s, which don\u2019t have to be repaid.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Some students choose to\u00a0<strong>self-fund<\/strong>\u00a0their degrees, which may involve a combination of methods, including savings, earnings through part-time work alongside your degree, and help from family if possible. There are various flexible work opportunities available to all students through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kcl.targetconnect.net\/home.html\">Kings CareerConnect<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kclsu.org\/about\/workforus\/\">KCLSU<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingstalentbank.com\/\">King\u2019s Talentbank<\/a>. There may be a maximum number of hours you can work, so it is advisable to check this before making a working commitment, particularly if you are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/campuslife\/services\/student-advice-support\/how\/international-student-support\/immigration-and-visas\/working-in-the-uk\/working-in-the-uk\">studying on a visa<\/a>. Working alongside your studies is feasible, as long as you can establish a healthy work-life balance and manage your time well; it is slightly easier to do this if you are studying part-time. If you are eligible for, but choosing not to take a student loan, you can find some information on what your options are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/study\/postgraduate\/fees-and-funding\/student-funding\/postgraduate-taught-funding\/religious-loans\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\r\n<h4><strong>Budgeting<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Saving money and spending reasonably as a student in London sounds like an impossible feat; I am here to tell you that anybody can do it (even me) when equipped with the right tools and tips.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:image {\"id\":745,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} -->\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-745\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/ioppn-students\/files\/2020\/01\/food-1932466_960_720-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Your student status is the key to hundreds of discounts on food, clothes and events in London;<em>\u00a0always<\/em>\u00a0keep your\u00a0<strong>uni ID<\/strong> with you and when you get to the till,\u00a0<em>always<\/em>\u00a0ask if there is a student discount available (you have nothing to lose!). Investing in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.totum.com\/campaigns\/nus-extra-is-totum?gclid=Cj0KCQiAvJXxBRCeARIsAMSkApri4WrOFUlkjdvhnJ49LCHWSxD7Q5IFC_O-LGhNZbm0sQIS76wATpYaAjqhEALw_wcB\">NUS\/Totum card<\/a>\u00a0gives you access to over 250 student discounts, even on TV and internet bills! Free apps such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myunidays.com\/GB\/en-GB\">UNiDAYS<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.studentbeans.com\/\">StudentBeans<\/a>\u00a0always have fantastic deals for students, and some stores require to see your ID on the app.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p><strong>Travel-wise<\/strong>, you can save 30% on adult-rate travelcards and bus\/tram pass season tickets by applying for an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/fares\/free-and-discounted-travel\/18-plus-student-oyster-photocard\">18+ Student Oyster photocard<\/a>. The London Hopper Fare allows you to make unlimited journeys for free within one hour of first touching in using pay as you go (contactless or Oyster) on the bus, or tram \u2013 as long as you use the same card! You can find out more on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/fares\/find-fares\/bus-and-tram-fares\">TFL website<\/a>. For \u00a330, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.16-25railcard.co.uk\/\">16-25 railcard<\/a>\u00a0saves you a 1\/3 on rail fares throughout Great Britain for the whole year.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Choosing your\u00a0<strong>accommodation<\/strong>\u00a0wisely can save you a lot of money; living closer to central London is far more expensive than living slightly further out, so it\u2019s worth checking out accommodation which isn\u2019t smack bang in the middle of London.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p><strong>Food<\/strong>\u00a0is 100% where most of my money goes (no regrets) but we should all consider bringing in our own lunches every now and then, utilising supermarket student discounts (big up\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.totum.com\/se\/student-discount\/co-op\">Co-Op<\/a>) and purchasing a reusable cup for hot drinks at the IoPPN Caf\u00e9. There are these adorable KCL branded Keep cups too, available at main restaurants at all campuses!<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:image {\"align\":\"center\",\"id\":742,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\"} -->\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-742\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/ioppn-students\/files\/2020\/01\/DGIxE5XXsAA9anj-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<!-- \/wp:image -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Rather than going all out on lots of nights out, why not spend a fun\u00a0<strong>night in<\/strong>\u00a0with your flatmates or friends? You could have a chill movie night or games night and save a lot of money in the process, while having just as much (if not more) fun as on a night out! Cheap supermarket wine tastes a lot better than cheap bar wine too\u2026<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>A fun way to make some extra cash is taking part in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/ioppn\/depts\/pm\/research\/cfad\/research-studies-currently-recruiting-participants\"><strong>research studies<\/strong><\/a>, where you can get a first-hand experience of what a study looks like, and how it might be conducted. Researchers at the IoPPN are always looking to recruit participants, and offer cash, vouchers or other goodies in return for taking part.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>Look out for\u00a0<strong>free talks and exhibitions<\/strong>, such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/london.sciencegallery.com\/\">KCL Science Gallery<\/a>\u00a0where there are amazing exhibitions exploring a combination of science and art. There\u2019s also tonnes of free museums and galleries around London to explore. I would keep an eye out for early bird tickets for subject-relevant events provided by the different KCL societies, such as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/KCLNeuroscience\/?ref=br_rs\">Neuroscience<\/a>\u00a0society. UNiDAYS carry out student lockdown days at Westfield shopping centre, where you can get your hands on lots of free goodies and student deals in a private area.<\/p>\r\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\r\n<p>To help make budgeting much easier, free mobile\u00a0<strong>banking\u00a0<\/strong>apps, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.starlingbank.com\/\">Starling<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/monzo.com\/\">Monzo<\/a>, have budgeting tools like categories e.g. food and travel, to give you more control over how and where you spend your money.
