This year&#8217;s magazine &#8211; titled &#8220;Somersetting&#8221; &#8211; offers a student perspective on studying English at King&#8217;s and addresses some issues of concern for new students. During induction week, the blog will be spotlighting sections of this year&#8217;s magazine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Next up&#8230; Tanzim Kamali reviews some of London&#8217;s libraries.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>British Library<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Closest station: King\u2019s Cross\/ Euston<br \/>\n30 min walk from Strand Campus<br \/>\nSign up beforehand for a Reader Pass<\/p>\n<p>+ Loads of spaces in the Reading Rooms<br \/>\n+ They have a copy of every publication in the UK which you can request to read in the Reading Rooms at short notice<br \/>\n+ They always have cool exhibitions to discover on breaks from studying<br \/>\n+ It&#8217;s the UK&#8217;s national research library!<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Can\u2019t take much into the Reading Rooms, have to leave it in the<br \/>\ncloakroom<br \/>\n&#8211; Finding a seat outside of the Reading Rooms is impossible<\/p>\n<p><strong>Senate House Library<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Closest station: Russell Square\/ Goodge Street<br \/>\n25 min walk from Strand Campus<br \/>\nUse your KCL card to sign up for free membership<\/p>\n<p>+ An impressive collection of books that are available to borrow, handy for when you don\u2019t want to read a text in the BL<br \/>\n+ A good range of studying spaces but it takes some time to find them as most are hidden around bookshelves<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; As it is a fairly old library, the building and its furniture is a bit on the musty side<br \/>\n&#8211; As the books are available to be borrowed, a lot of them aren\u2019t in<br \/>\ngreat condition, especially the ones on the English reading lists<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2936\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/english\/files\/2021\/09\/somersetting.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"389\" height=\"542\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>LSE Library<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Closest station: Temple<br \/>\n5 min walk from Strand Campus<br \/>\nCurrently only open to LSE students due to Covid, but otherwise you can use your KCL card to register for membership<\/p>\n<p>+ Ridiculously close to Strand Campus<br \/>\n+ Modern and clean feel<br \/>\n+ Different types of study spaces, silent spaces, group spaces, low noise spaces<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Not the best collection of books for English students but when you find a book you need it is usually in great condition and easily obtainable due to the low demand on literature<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wellcome Collection<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Closest station: Euston<br \/>\n32 min walk from Strand Campus<br \/>\nBook a free ticket before you visit<\/p>\n<p>+ Quiet, spaced out seating (even before Covid)<br \/>\n+ The coolest science exhibitions to look at when you get bored<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; They close at 5pm most days (close at 7pm on Thursdays) and they are closed Sundays too<br \/>\n&#8211; Like BL, you can\u2019t take much in with you to the library, you have to put your bags\/coats\/food\/drink away in the lockers provided before<br \/>\nheading into the library<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The full magazine can be found here: <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/english\/files\/2021\/09\/Somerssetting-Magazine-Final.pdf\">Somersetting Magazine<\/a>.
