Genetic and environmental influences are described as<\/span><b><i> interacting<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, as neither one on their own may cause an outcome, but the combination of the two factors together influences a specific response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gene-environment interaction is an important concept in psychological research, as it may help us to understand why some people develop a disorder after a stressful or traumatic experience, while others do not.\u00a0 For <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/the-british-journal-of-psychiatry\/article\/effect-of-polygenic-risk-scores-on-depression-in-childhood-trauma\/9B0B42D042DDABD0FFF32E11A5C481D0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">example<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, those who have particularly high genetic risk for depression may be more likely to develop symptoms after experiencing a stressful event, whereas others who experience the same event but have low genetic predisposition may develop more mild, or no, symptoms. This research shows that genetic factors may influence the risk of disorder onset, in part by altering a person\u2019s susceptibility to adverse environments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/editlab\/files\/2023\/02\/iStock-1353578957-1-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4964 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/editlab\/files\/2023\/02\/iStock-1353578957-1-1024x341.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"784\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/editlab\/files\/2023\/02\/iStock-1353578957-1-1024x341.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/editlab\/files\/2023\/02\/iStock-1353578957-1-300x100.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/editlab\/files\/2023\/02\/iStock-1353578957-1-768x256.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/editlab\/files\/2023\/02\/iStock-1353578957-1-1536x512.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/editlab\/files\/2023\/02\/iStock-1353578957-1-2048x683.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 784px) 100vw, 784px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><strong>But what about positive experiences?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although there is often a focus on adverse environments when thinking about mental health, there are also many positive experiences that play an important role in an individual\u2019s outcomes. These could include having a supportive network of family or friends, or experiencing situations designed to promote mental wellbeing, such as psychological therapy. These experiences may also interact with pre-existing genetic factors to influence <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">positive<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> outcomes. For <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jad.2022.02.015\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">example<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, having higher genetic liability for the personality trait openness is associated with a greater response to antidepressant medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When considering both adverse and positive environments, our understanding of gene-environment interaction can shift from focusing only on \u201cvulnerability\u201d to negative experiences towards broader \u201csensitivity\u201d to the environment as a whole. Sensitivity to both negative and positive aspects of the environment is termed <\/span><b><i>differential susceptibility<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and is illustrated in the figure below. Under this framework, individuals who are generally less sensitive to their environments, the red line, have comparable moderate outcomes across both adverse and supportive environments. The development of differential susceptibility theory reflects a broader change of perspective in psychiatry, moving away from a focus on risk and vulnerability and towards an understanding of resilience and embracing of individual differences. In line with this theory, both high and low sensitivity are viewed as valuable characteristics.
