This series is about common \u201cmyths\u201d or beliefs about genetics and psychology, particularly those that have arisen in conversations we have been having with members of the public about the \u201cGenetic Links to Anxiety and Depression\u201d or <a href=\"https:\/\/gladstudy.org.uk\/about\/\">GLAD Study<\/a>. There are many easily made misunderstandings about the meaning of research findings , including issues such as research ethics and data security, and about the big picture of why our research is important. Below are examples of some of the questions\/comments that we have received:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNot more money for research! We should be putting all of that money into the NHS to treat these disorders instead.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEveryone feels depressed or anxious sometimes. People should just learn how to deal with their emotions!\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNobody has found the gene for depression or anxiety, so they must not be genetic.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAnxiety and depression are all about trauma so why look at genetics?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf I have the genes for depression or anxiety, my children will definitely develop these disorders\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our mythbusting blog series aims to address some of the most common misconceptions that we have come across, and explain more about taking part in studies, why research is important, and how this will help future generations. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We hope that these mythbusters will be accessible and interesting for everyone, and we\u2019d love feedback on them!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/editlab\/files\/2019\/04\/glad-logo-4-yellow-box-bold-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3064 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/editlab\/files\/2019\/04\/glad-logo-4-yellow-box-bold-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"595\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/editlab\/files\/2019\/04\/glad-logo-4-yellow-box-bold-1.jpg 595w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/editlab\/files\/2019\/04\/glad-logo-4-yellow-box-bold-1-300x154.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 595px) 100vw, 595px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome to the first post in our next blog series: Mythbusters!
