The King&#8217;s Judges said Curie&#8217;s attention-grabbing presentation was &#8220;top notch&#8221;, clearly explained, and her delivery was &#8220;impeccable&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW227866633 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227866633 BCX8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/curiekphd\">Curie<\/a>\u00a0is based in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/neuroscience\/about\/departments\/basic-clinical-neuroscience\">Department of Basic &amp; Clinical Neuroscience<\/a> within the <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW227866633 BCX8\" href=\"https:\/\/preview-kcl.cloud.contensis.com\/ioppn\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW227866633 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW227866633 BCX8\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology &amp; Neuroscience<\/span><\/span><\/a>, and her 3MT is titled <em>The Positive Impact of Intermittent Fasting on Memory and the Brain.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are Curie&#8217;s thoughts on her King&#8217;s 3MT experience<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Having thought about taking part in the 3MT every year during my PhD and putting it off, this year was my last chance to do it and I&#8217;m so glad I did! It has truly been a fun experience, not to mention, thought-provoking in terms of the way it encourages you to think about how to communicate your work. Not only that, but it was fascinating to hear about the very diverse research being carried out within King&#8217;s outside of my field.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>All the finalists were amazing, so I am feeling humbled and excited to be chosen as the winner to represent KCL at the National Finals. Dan&#8217;s 3MT is titled <\/span><\/span><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW41282659 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW41282659 BCX8\">Modification of HIV-1 for Human T Cell Gene Therapy.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW144022163 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW144022163 BCX8\">The Three Minute Thesis competition was a great experience to try and break down my complex project which would normally span four years into a short period of time. It was challenging but rewarding as I now feel well equipped to explain my project easier to different audiences. It was also great to present to new coming PhD students and felt privileged to do so. Finally, it was a fantastic chance to get an understanding of the research going on outside my normal area of health sciences. I highly recommend people to have a go!<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Nigel Eady, Director of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/research\/support\/professional-development\">Research Talent<\/a> at King&#8217;s, and Chair of the Grand Final Judging Panel, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"line-height: 24px\"><p><em>Engaging and inspiring people about a research topic is a real skill, especially if the audience knows little about the subject. Our 3 Minute Thesis finalists all did an excellent job in bringing their research to life \u2013 covering everything from nanoparticles to charity sector pay, gene therapy to social media. Curie Kim, our overall winner, gave a particularly clear &amp; memorable presentation about the impact of fasting on memory and the brain, which left our judging panel wanting to know more. I was so impressed with the high quality of the talks that I thought: I wish I would be able to do that. I am now in my final year, so this was my last opportunity to give it a try. I thought I had nothing to lose and decided to book a place for the faculty heat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As a computational physicist doing basic research, I found it very difficult to make my science sound interesting to a broad audience, because my research has no direct applications. After all, what I essentially do is solve equations with my computer. The hardest part was to find a way to make my science approachable and relatable. I gave it a lot of thought, until I found a simple metaphor that I could use for my slide and as a starting point. Then, I just had to simplify my methods to a step-by-step recipe of how I achieved my results.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It has been a challenging experience that I have enjoyed a lot.
