It is particularly challenging this year with the Covid-19 pandemic, restrictions to being on campus\u00a0and\u00a0difficulty forging new connections and networks. It can be highly beneficial to make connections with peers who may have been through similar experiences and navigated the early stages of their doctorate successfully.<\/p>\n<p>The International PGR Student Buddy Scheme\u00a0(iPGR\u00a0Buddy Scheme)\u00a0seeks to\u00a0connect\u00a0new international PGR students\u00a0(pre-upgrade)\u00a0with current international PGR students who have completed their upgrade from MPhil to PhD (usually after 12-18 months, or part-time (PT) equivalent) and can act as a buddy or mentor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Terminology\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Buddy =\u00a0current\u00a0PGR student, who has passed their upgrade viva and helps a new student transition into their PGR degree at King\u2019s College.<\/p>\n<p>Starting Student = a new student, who has not yet passed their upgrade viva, seeking a Buddy to provide informal advice and support as they start their PGR degree at King\u2019s College\u00a0London.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remit and topics\u00a0of discussion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The scheme is informal, and primarily led by the needs of the Starting Student. The Buddies offer a\u00a0friendly connection, acting as a\u00a0sounding board\u00a0and\/or\u00a0sharing\u00a0their own experiences and lessons learned. They might\u00a0help signpost\u00a0a Starting Student\u00a0to other services and support available, although they are not expected to know all the answers.<\/p>\n<p>Topics of discussion that might be covered between Buddies and Starting Students:<\/p>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li role=\"listitem\" data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"82\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Adjusting to research\/study in the UK<\/li>\n<li role=\"listitem\" data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"82\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Logistics, and signposting to services that can help (e.g.\u00a0Student Advice team)<\/li>\n<li role=\"listitem\" data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"82\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Connecting\u00a0with\u00a0the PGR community while working remotely<\/li>\n<li role=\"listitem\" data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"82\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Training and development opportunities<\/li>\n<li role=\"listitem\" data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"82\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Communities and social activities at KCL and outside<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A Buddy would\u00a0<strong>not\u00a0<\/strong>be expected to:<\/p>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li role=\"listitem\" data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"82\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Provide\u00a0the kind of support expected from a Supervisor, such\u00a0as input\u00a0on a Starting Student\u2019s research project, or\u00a0pastoral support.<\/li>\n<li role=\"listitem\" data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Calibri\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"82\" data-aria-level=\"1\">Provide any expert\u00a0advise\u00a0e.g.\u00a0on visas, but rather help the student to seek pathways towards help or solutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Eligibility to participate\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are currently restricting this pilot scheme to international students, identified by a requirement for a Tier 4 Student visa. We will prioritise Starting Students who haven\u2019t previously lived or studied in the UK (prior to starting their doctorate).\u00a0We would\u00a0not expect students in their final year of their doctorate and\/or writing\u00a0up\u00a0their\u00a0thesis to\u00a0volunteer as a Buddy, as their priority is submitting their\u00a0thesis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matching\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will ask about your faculty, school or department, and country of domicile in the application form. Where possible (and if requested), we will try to match students from the same or similar countries of domicile and\/or faculty, however, we cannot guarantee this match in all cases.<\/p>\n<p>Note that we can\u2019t guarantee\u00a0that all students will receive a matching, as this will be dependent on the number of\u00a0buddies who volunteer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Webinar\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We will host a webinar on\u00a0<strong>Friday 27\u00a0November\u00a014:00<\/strong>\u00a0that all participants (Buddies and\u00a0Starting\u00a0Students) are strongly encouraged to attend. This webinar will provide key information on the support services available at King\u2019s for international PGR students, provide advice on how to get the most out of the scheme, what to do if it doesn\u2019t work out, and to answer any questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Methods\u00a0of communication\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We anticipate most\u00a0students\u00a0will communicate via phone or video calls\u00a0e.g.\u00a0via MS\u00a0Teams, Zoom,\u00a0Social media\u00a0e.g.\u00a0Whatsapp,\u00a0phone calls. You might also email\u00a0\u2013\u00a0we\u00a0encourage\u00a0you\u00a0to discuss\u00a0what works\u00a0best for you.\u00a0You must follow current\u00a0King\u2019s and\u00a0government\u00a0guidelines\u00a0with regards to meeting face-to-face.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Commitment required\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re paired, we suggest an initial chat and you can\u00a0agree\u00a0between you how often to speak and topics for discussion.
