{"id":230,"date":"2018-08-22T14:06:28","date_gmt":"2018-08-22T13:06:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/doctoralstudies\/?p=230"},"modified":"2018-08-28T11:06:42","modified_gmt":"2018-08-28T10:06:42","slug":"we-need-you-to-help-develop-wellbeing-resources-for-phd-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/doctoralstudies\/2018\/08\/22\/we-need-you-to-help-develop-wellbeing-resources-for-phd-students\/","title":{"rendered":"We need you &#8211; to help develop wellbeing resources for PhD students!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is a truth universally acknowledged that doing a PhD will enrich your life, improve your career, and make you a better, happier person.<\/p>\n<p>Isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>Certainly, there are few other pursuits that will allow you to dedicate yourself so single-mindedly to a research project, academic question, or experimental project in a field of your choosing. And while many PhD graduates do not go on to become full professors or lecturers in their specialism, the PhD develops to a high degree many of the skills and competencies most valued by employers.<\/p>\n<p>But it is becoming increasingly clear that for many of of the students that do go on to study for a PhD that an improvement in one&#8217;s general mental wellbeing is far from guaranteed. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/higher-education-network\/blog\/2014\/mar\/01\/mental-health-issue-phd-research-university\">a recent article in the Guardian<\/a> put it, mental health issues among postgraduate research students are becoming so common that they are now an accepted feature of\u00a0 academic life. Studies from <a href=\"http:\/\/ga.berkeley.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/wellbeingreport_2014.pdf\">UC Berkeley<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/re.ukri.org\/documents\/2018\/mental-health-report\/\">University of Ghent<\/a> back up this article with statistics, suggesting high levels of depression, anxiety, and mental distress among PhD students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/doctoralstudies\/files\/2018\/08\/board-2853022_960_720.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-232 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/doctoralstudies\/files\/2018\/08\/board-2853022_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/doctoralstudies\/files\/2018\/08\/board-2853022_960_720.jpg 960w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/doctoralstudies\/files\/2018\/08\/board-2853022_960_720-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/doctoralstudies\/files\/2018\/08\/board-2853022_960_720-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/doctoralstudies\/files\/2018\/08\/board-2853022_960_720-676x355.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We believe PhD students should not have to sacrifice their wellbeing in order to reap the significant intellectual and professional benefits of their doctorate. This is why King&#8217;s College London is working in collaboration with the University of Derby and the UK student mental health charity, Student Minds, are working on a major project to develop effective resources that can improve the wellbeing of postgraduate research students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In order to make this project work, we need you, current PGR students &#8211; from as diverse a range of backgrounds possible &#8211; to join a student panel at KCL. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Participants on this panel will be asked about:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Their experience as a PGR student<\/li>\n<li>How research has changed their relationships<\/li>\n<li>And how the academic process has affected their work\/life balance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Throughout, participants will be asked to reflect on both achievements and challenges in their experience of life as a PGR student.<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in taking part in this project and sitting on the PGR panel, you can fill out an <a href=\"https:\/\/kcliop.eu.qualtrics.com\/jfe\/form\/SV_6L7BmXm39Vq4iKF\">application form here<\/a>.
