{"id":977,"date":"2021-04-29T14:00:09","date_gmt":"2021-04-29T14:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/?p=977"},"modified":"2021-04-30T11:58:32","modified_gmt":"2021-04-30T11:58:32","slug":"using-student-media-assignments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/using-student-media-assignments\/","title":{"rendered":"Using student media assignments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In her chapter in the recently published book \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Languages at work, competent\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">multilinguals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and the pedagogical challenges of COVID-19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Cecilia Goria de<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">scribes the positive respo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nse of staff to the enforced move to teaching onli<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ne due to the pandemic. This phase was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">described as Emergency Remote Teachin<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">g (ERT) \u2013 the quick unplanned response to the lockdo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wn. Hodges et al. (2020)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> describe the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">speed with which this move to online instruction ha<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ppen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unprecedented<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">staggering<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But how did students respond?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following the shift to emergency remote teaching in March<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a02020<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a090% of our students claimed that motivation was a disruptive factor in completing their studies. 70% of students reported concerns with motivation for the coming academic year, compounded by the reduced levels of on-campus teaching and face to face social interactions they will have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-993 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/files\/2021\/04\/Student-Media-Assignments-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"Student Media Assignments 1\" width=\"825\" height=\"464\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Requiring students to record and submit media for assessment is not\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">new<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0development but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this method of assessment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has been adopted more widely\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">recently\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">due to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lockdown<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0caused by the recent global pandemic shifting teaching online<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In part<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the adoption has been driven by a desire to help students to remain motivated and address some of the concerns described above<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">efore the advent of smartphones,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">here at Nottingham\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">trailblaz<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing staff<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in Geography, Cultures, Languages and Area Studies\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and Nursing were\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">se<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">assessment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0activities that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">requi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">red<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their students to submit\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">media rather than text.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ac<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">k<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nowledge<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that the process for creating, submitting and marking such submissions was much trickier in the past, it\u2019s a testament to the enthusiasm such assignments generate that the results are so inspiring<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. You can see some <a href=\"https:\/\/mediaspace.nottingham.ac.uk\/media\/Geography+student+media+assignment+submissions\/1_2jkkbrhs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>examples of submissions from students<\/strong><\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in Geography (used with kind permission). <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Students often spent many hours working on creating videos<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This was not always desirable and has<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0led to a greater understanding of the importance of setting clear expectations for the time commitment and providing a clear marking rubric.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In fact<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for the last twenty years<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Independent Second Year Project, a module in the Department of Classics<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, has gone a step further in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">innovative approach\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">assessment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tudents choose both the subject matter\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">format of their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">submitted\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">work<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. As well as video, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nottingham.ac.uk\/excellenceineducation\/2017\/11\/30\/a-project-module-in-classics-that-produces-some-absolutely-fabulous-ideas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>submissions have\u00a0ranged<\/strong><\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from website<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, teaching-plan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, travel guide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, reconstruction<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, fiction to artwork<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. A <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nottingham.ac.uk\/digitaldialogues\/2017\/03\/03\/isyp-digitisation-project-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>collection of student submissions<\/strong><\/a><\/span> has <span data-contrast=\"auto\">now\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">been digitised<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0so that students embarking on the assessment can explore the wide range of past submiss<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-995\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/files\/2021\/04\/Student-Media-Assignments-2-1024x574.png\" alt=\"Student Media Assignments 2\" width=\"825\" height=\"462\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So why did the s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">etting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">assessments\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in which<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the students\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are required to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">submit\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">media<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">become so popular?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For some<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0subjects it was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0obvious\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">easy\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">alternative to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">assessments that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">had previously<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0been carried out<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in-person<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eg<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0presentations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that could not be carried out in the normal way due to the requirements for social distancing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. A range of alternative assessments of this type were set to enable students to demonstrate language acquisition for example.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Self-reflection<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211; recording re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">flective videos<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as part of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ass<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">essment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0again i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s nothing new b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ut the rate of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">adoption\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of thi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s method incre<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sed during\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lock<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">down<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Staff fou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd tha<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t many st<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">udents preferre<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0method t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o writing long\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ref<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lections and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the results we<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">re more authe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ic and more lik<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e natur<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">al\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">self-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reflecti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0wider context\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">beyon<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d educa<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n. Education had long used roleplay i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0counselling courses and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">summaries of teaching practic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fact,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0our recent work\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the field of Student Digital Capabilities identifies media literacy as a skill for life. (Jisc \u2018Digital Experience Insights Survey, 2019)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u200b found that s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tudents\u2019 courses don\u2019t sufficiently \u2018prepare them for the digital workplace\u2019.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u200b<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Serrano\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">et al.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0note in their research, the current climate in Higher Education Institutions encourage\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">forms of assessment that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">favour<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0success-oriented student mentality<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(strategic learning) rather than\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">authentic self-assessment of what has really been learnt<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0research\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we carried out over 10 years ago at The University of Nottingham when first trialling systems to automate the recording of lectures\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">found\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students record<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0their own presentations for later review\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">even where there was no related a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ssessment.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ey understood that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">self reflection<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0helped them to perform better<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and wanted to review their own performances to help the to improve their left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Assessment is high stakes and often induces fear and panic in students so ensure that you set a formative task that enables them to develop the necessary skills students in understanding what is expected and the teacher in marking consistently.<\/span><span
