{"id":841,"date":"2020-08-06T09:00:05","date_gmt":"2020-08-06T09:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/?p=841"},"modified":"2020-08-06T10:12:54","modified_gmt":"2020-08-06T10:12:54","slug":"education-elevenses-colleagues-who-teach-face-the-pivot-online-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/education-elevenses-colleagues-who-teach-face-the-pivot-online-together\/","title":{"rendered":"Education Elevenses \u2013 colleagues who teach face the pivot online together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Education Elevenses are faculty-wide, peer-led,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">centrally supported<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0regular meetings in which colleagues share practice and ideas about the pivot to online teaching. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They were first established by Michael\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">K\u00f6lling<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Vice Dean (Education) in the Faculty of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, with Daniel Cornwell (Lecturer, Chemistry) and Paco Rodriguez Fortuno (Senior Lecturer, Physics) appointed as convenors, supported by Mira Vogel (King&#8217;s Academy). After a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ten-minute<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0talk on a theme, the remaining time is given over to discussion through which colleagues share knowledge, practice and expand each other\u2019s perspectives. These kinds of informal conversations have never been more important than during a pandemic which has dispersed colleagues into their homes and squeezed out many of the opportunities for free-ranging discussion that existed on campus.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Running twice a week across June and July the Elevenses have consistently attracted between 35 and 50 participants to discuss topics such as &#8216;Using pre-recorded presentations in synchronous online assessment&#8217;, &#8216;Recording handwriting for video lectures&#8217;, &#8216;Redesigning a module for online teaching&#8217; and &#8216;Using Workshops in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/study\/learningteaching\/ctel\/technologies\/keats\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">KEATS<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for peer\/<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">self-review<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\/assessment&#8217;. Education Elevenses have since been adopted by Arts and Humanities, with some modifications.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Set<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">up needed to be admin-light. Themes and timeslots were specified in an editable document on SharePoint, and volunteer or invited presenters were\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">encouraged to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sign themselves up either by selecting one of the themes or<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their own\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">topic, and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0choosing their preferred date. They typed their name in that slot &#8211; which meant it was clear to any subsequent presenters which\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dates<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and themes were still available &#8211; and a convenor would confirm. A\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/keats.kcl.ac.uk\/course\/view.php?id=78853\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">dedicated KEATS space<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(only available to King\u2019s College staff)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">presented a programme of upcoming events and links to past recordings<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-852 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/files\/2020\/08\/546A7950-F8AD-4CFF-A42B-D229C91D6718-1024x523.jpeg\" alt=\"Education Elevenses KEATS\" width=\"825\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/files\/2020\/08\/546A7950-F8AD-4CFF-A42B-D229C91D6718-1024x523.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/files\/2020\/08\/546A7950-F8AD-4CFF-A42B-D229C91D6718-300x153.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/files\/2020\/08\/546A7950-F8AD-4CFF-A42B-D229C91D6718-768x392.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/files\/2020\/08\/546A7950-F8AD-4CFF-A42B-D229C91D6718.jpeg 1397w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 825px) 100vw, 825px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meanwhile, Microsoft Teams Meetings were set up as a single meeting link copied across all the Outlook Calendar dates, which meant the chat would persist and could be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">referred back<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to later.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One important factor in gaining colleagues&#8217; attention and commitment was that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0all faculty staff received a personal<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Outlook\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Calendar invitation sent directly from the Vice Dean Education<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">somebody known to them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with a key strategic role in their faculty, indicating the value of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Elevense<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Presenters were briefed to talk for 10 minutes\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">leaving\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a subsequent 40 minutes for discussion (there was some scope for adapting this format for more interactive talks such as &#8216;Programme Level Assessment &#8211; Why and How?&#8217;). They were asked for their consent to record the presentations, but recording was turned off\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">after that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0so that colleagues could relax and discuss the topic freely and speculatively.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another important factor is that there are two academic convenors. Together they have an expanded network of potential speakers, sustain each other, make good decisions, and share the responsibilities of chairing and liaising with speakers.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oordination tends to happen in a Microsoft Teams chat rather than email.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-847 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/files\/2020\/08\/Microsoft-Teams-1024x565.png\" alt=\"Microsoft Teams\" width=\"825\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/files\/2020\/08\/Microsoft-Teams-1024x565.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/files\/2020\/08\/Microsoft-Teams-300x165.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/files\/2020\/08\/Microsoft-Teams-768x423.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/files\/2020\/08\/Microsoft-Teams.png 1248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 825px) 100vw, 825px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recordings from the Microsoft Teams Meetings are automatically sent to the Microsoft Stream account of whomever\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">activates the recording (so to streamline the process, make this the same person who posts the link to the recording)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">; from there they can be made widely available. After each session a coordinator\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">would paste\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the recording link into the KEATS space, growing\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/keats.kcl.ac.uk\/course\/view.php?id=78853\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">a collection of useful, focused talks<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from experienced colleagues<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A chair<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for each meeting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is vital. The chair welcomes and introduces the speaker, time-keeps, and encourages and coordinates the ensuing discussion. During the meetings there can be a tendency\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the discussion to divert into h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ow to access and operate the technologies. While this knowledge is necessary and the questions understandable, to keep the Education Elevenses discussion educational there needs to be a separate dedicated place where colleagues can post purely technical or operational queries and be confident that those will be promptly answered.\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The chair can refer colleagues to this dedicated channel for inquiries.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Participants have described their experiences of these meetings.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Education elevenses fast became my favourite two hours of the week\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2026 Whilst at times the prospect of learning so many different ways of approaching the move to online teaching delivery has seemed daunting, my colleagues have risen to the challenge of creating straightforward demonstrations of their approach to remote delivery content.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Helen\u00a0Coulshed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lecturer in Chemical Education)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe elevenses sessions have been a great forum for me to discover the rich diversity in teaching approaches within NMS.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is for me a very positive experience in knowing that I am not alone both with respect to areas where I feel confident and those that I take as challenges (rooms for improvement).\u202fIt is reassuring to listen to colleagues and realise that we all are in the same boat with the same destination: promote learning and student experience.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(Ernest Kamavuako,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Senior Lecturer in Engineering)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In summary, these events have been occasions for colleagues to be in each other\u2019s company and discuss education, share practice and help with each other\u2019s difficulties and dilemmas.
