Since its launch in 2023, the University of Nottingham has hosted <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW213031359 BCX0\">DigAcc<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213031359 BCX0\"> annually<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213031359 BCX0\">. data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42826124 BCX0\"> are<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW42826124 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> <span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart CommentHighlightPipeRest CommentHighlightRest SCXW42826124 BCX0\">many <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW42826124 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" BCX0\">currently<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW42826124 BCX0\"> missing is a space to bring those efforts together, which what I hoped DigAcc25 would help kickstart.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW42826124 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span SCXW187485058 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\">a faculty Technology Enhanced Learning Manager<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\">, I <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\">have been <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\">advocating for<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\"> digital accessibility <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\">in my faculty. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\">This includes raising awareness through empathy<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\">focused activities, delivering training for both academic and professional services staff, and carrying out<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"TextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\">audits<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW187485058 BCX0\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\"> on our virtual learning environment (VLE)<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\">When undertaking accessibility work, it is not unusual to feel isolated without a wider network to exchange ideas or seek advic<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\">e<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW187485058 BCX0\">. Potentially a risky move, but one that I think paid off! It was refreshing to be surrounded by colleagues who care about making our digital spaces at King\u2019s more inclusive.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Talks that stood out to me included sessions on how to bring accessibility into procurement processes and how other institutions have involved<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">neurodiver<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gent <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and disabled students in their <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">VLE<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> testing. I also appreciated talks on how emotional connection can help people understand why digital accessibility matters, and hearing how other institutions have approached accessibility audits. These latter areas are things we\u2019ve been working on in my faculty, so it was encouraging to know we\u2019re on the right track.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW46365577 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW46365577 BCX0\">I <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TrackChangeTextInsertion TrackedChange SCXW46365577 BCX0\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW46365577 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest SCXW46365577 BCX0\">gathered<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW46365577 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest SCXW46365577 BCX0\"> feedback<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"TextRun SCXW46365577 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightPipeRest SCXW46365577 BCX0\">after our local event to hear what people\u2019s highlights were. A majority of those who responded said they valued the chance to connect with others working on similar accessibility challenges. Event planning isn\u2019t my fort\u00e9 but I\u2019m glad King\u2019s colleagues were keen to be involved and make the event a success.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a result of DigAcc25, I\u2019m setting up a digital accessibility community at King\u2019s. This will be a space where anyone with an interest in digital accessibility can share resources, ask questions, and hopefully learn from each other. These ideas will be shared with senior leadership, and I hope we can shift from working in our silos to a more joined up approach.
