{"id":1008,"date":"2021-05-25T14:58:30","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T14:58:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/?p=1008"},"modified":"2021-05-25T15:00:52","modified_gmt":"2021-05-25T15:00:52","slug":"tech-test-thursdays-for-digital-capabilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kcl.ac.uk\/digitaleducation\/tech-test-thursdays-for-digital-capabilities\/","title":{"rendered":"Tech Test Thursdays for Digital Capabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When the Covid-19 pandemic\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">put<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">us<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0fully<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">online<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">colleagues in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/academy\/index\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">King\u2019s Academy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">needed to expand our repertoire with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a range of evolving<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">technologies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0lead\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">educational development programmes and sessions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">strive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o demonstrate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">intrepid<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">successful\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">designs which make best use of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our learning environments<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">foreseeable future\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">those<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0environments<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0would be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">digital<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This post gives\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a rationale for carving out\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">regular time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to test things out\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">together<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">followed by<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0details about how\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0set this up<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">low-maintenance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">overlap\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">amongst our<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0digital technologies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and consequently a degree of choice which can\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bewildering<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as it is positive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One example is the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0array<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0assessment types\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with subtle but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">important<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0differences\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">you only really grasp by practising<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In contrast<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it is unclear how some technologies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">particularly those\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">born in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">enterprise rather than educati<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">bent to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">educational\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">purposes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e often have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0questions around\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">workflows<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, views<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, permissions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">collaborative\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">authoring.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0simply<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0switch to a non-editing role<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to check\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">something<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">materials\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">files, pages, videos<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0etc)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0it\u2019s easy to switch role and check\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">those<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from a student point of view<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211; but<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0our<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0main challenge\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">activitie<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">especially group activities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0importance of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">community and belonging to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">student success\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was already<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0established<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0before Covid-19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. R<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">esearch\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in 2020<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">underlined<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the value students\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ascribe to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">interactions\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">within<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0curriculum<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">yet\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">these are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the most challenging to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">test and practice<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0because<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">at a time when e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">veryone\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">under so much pressure it feels awkward<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to ask colleagues\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to divert their time into\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">helping us<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the end this\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">concerns\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">empathy and considerate design. Gaining a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0perspective of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and colleagues\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in groups<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is crucial<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0anticipat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">guiding<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their interactions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with each<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0other<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and any artefacts they produce togethe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It informs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0decisions about<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">scaffolds (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">practical\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">instructions,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">conceptual and strategic\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">guidance<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">needed,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0where<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, how<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and when.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e were seeking<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0practice opportunities\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0build<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our own\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">confidence and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">enable us to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">facilitate the activity smoothly for students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">who emphasise in surveys<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">good organisation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more important to them than ever<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e decided to set something<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0up<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0working title\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tech Test Thursdays<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in which we would<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0practi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">real scenarios\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">while adopting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0different perspectives<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Weekly (<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more recently, fortnightly) anyone from our team who\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is free at that time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0meets to test out an activity\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which one of us has requested<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which are otherwise impossible to test alone<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Examples<\/span><span
