18:00 Showing of the film “Besouro” (dir João Daniel Tikhomiroff) with English subtitles. The film “Besouro”, directed by João Daniel Tikhomiroff, is based on the life of a legendary capoeira fighter from Bahia, Besouro. The story is set in the 19th century just after Abolition and shows the oppression of the black population and their struggle for freedom using capoeira as a form of resistance. It was filmed in the beautiful historical re

gion of Reconcavo Baiano, in the state of Bahia, and the stunning scenery and the capoeira fighting scenes are second to none. Deborah Young, film critic of The Hollywood Reporter film review, has said about it: “The entertaining “Besouro” is a rare martial arts film that has an engrossing story to tell and a social point to make.” (Oct. 2010)

19:30 Comments about the film, capoeira and Q&A with Brazilian academics and capoeira specialists based in the UK Jorge Goia, Frances Lima Goodingham and Brisa Amazonas.
