King’s PhD Students, King’s Widening Participation Department needs you!

King’s Widening Participation unit is seeking PhD students who would be interested in supervising an academic piece of work, produced by A-level pupils. We provide full support and a payment of £150 per student completing an assignment with your support. This is a great way to use your experience of university to help pupils in understanding and developing the skills necessary to be successful at a competitive university. In addition, this offers you an opportunity to work with young people and gain experience of supervising, marking and providing feedback on academic work close to undergraduate level.

This role requires you to be available in London for around 10 hours between May and September 2017 to meet with and provide feedback to your tutees.  Successful applicants will be expected to attend training on the 14th June, 2.30 – 5pm and attend the Launch event where you will meet your tutees on the 19th July, 5pm – 8pm.

Meaningful, paid teaching experience at this year’s K+ Spotlight Summer School

An exciting, developmental and paid opportunity is being offered to King’s doctoral and post-doctoral researchers to join in the collaboration between The Brilliant Club and the K+ programme, which is King’s College London’s flagship widening participation initiative.

The Brilliant Club is recruiting King’s College London doctoral and post-doctoral researchers to deliver the academic strand of the K+ Spotlight Summer School, an annual highlight in the K+ Programme. You will receive training from qualified teachers, and then design and deliver a series of five tutorials based on your own research to small groups of sixth form pupils over the course of a week.

PhD students wanted as study skills tutors

The Study Skills Centre at King’s College London are looking for PhD or postdoctoral students to support and advise students on a one-to-one basis in academic writing ( essay writing, critical analysis, dissertations) , mathematics and statistics, (experimental design and data analysis, SPSS (beginners, intermediate and advanced), Minitab and NviVO).

These are paid temporary part-time positions, requiring 3 hours of your time per week.

You will be expected to support undergraduate and postgraduate students.

You will be working in one of these locations: Franklin Wilkins Library, New Hunt’s House, Weston Education Centre or Maughan Library. It would be useful if you could state your preference of location in your application.

Experience / Skills
You will be undertaking a PhD at King’s College London or have completed one.

Qualifications
Teaching experience would be desirable, but you have to be undertaking/have completed a PhD.

2 Paid Part-time Academic Internships, Alleyn’s School – South London

Alleyn’s School is an independent, co-educational day school situated in Dulwich, South London. The School is seeking to appoint two paid academic interns from Sept/Oct 2015. These internships will run until the end of the Advent term in December 2015 for two sessions a week, preferably two afternoons i.e. from 12.45 – 5.00 pm, to include 30 minutes for lunch (provided free as part of the package). There may be an opportunity to extend the position into the Lent term 2016.

These posts will appeal to post-graduate students working on a Master’s degree, a Doctorate or a post-doctoral student taking a sabbatical before entering the world of full-time employment. They offer the opportunity to spend time gaining some paid work-experience in an educational environment, utilising the knowledge and skills they have developed during their university studies. They are not exclusively designed for aspiring teachers, but would clearly be of particular benefit to those considering a career in teaching.

The successful candidates will become members of the School’s teaching staff and support students in a number of ways:

  • Providing Upper School Extension sessions during the second half of lunch-times and after-school. These will focus on leading discussion around topics of interest, current research etc. to sixth-form students who are contemplating studying their subject / subject area at university
  • Providing support or developing topics with individual students or groups of students in the Upper School during afternoon lesson time
  • Providing some Upper School Enrichment sessions during the second half of lunch-times and after-school, i.e. talks which are less subject-intense and would interest not only students studying the subject itself, but a wider range of students as part of their general education
  • Supporting the general academic work of a department or range of departments, as directed by the Head of Department and Deputy Head (Academic).

Precise responsibilities would be allocated according to the skills and abilities of the successful applicants. Applicants should be conscientious, reliable and have good interpersonal skills. They will enjoy working with young people as part of a small team, but also be able to show initiative and be self-motivating.

Terms and Conditions
On a day-to-day basis the successful candidate will be accountable to a particular Head of Department but overall they will be accountable to the Deputy Head [Personnel & Administration] who will oversee their role in the School.

The post will start as soon as possible after the position has been accepted and the necessary safeguarding checks completed, and will finish in the week beginning 14 December 2015. The salary for the post is £1,500, which will be paid in 3 monthly instalments. Some overnight accommodation may be available.

The Access Project

The Access Project matches high-flying graduates with students from disadvantaged areas for weekly one-to-one tutorials, helping the students to boost their grades and access highly selective universities.

Working in partnership with schools in London since 2008, the Access Project has a proven track record of raising attainment and widening access. They offer students tutorials in the following subjects:

Maths, Economics, English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, French, Spanish, Psychology and Sociology

As a tutor you would meet with your student for one hour a week at a coffee shop or other public location near your place of study. The AP train all their volunteers, give you a fantastic bank of resources and their Programme Coordinators are always on hand to provide support and guidance.

They will provide full support and a payment of £150 per student completing an assignment with your support. This is a great way to use your experience of university to help pupils in understanding and developing the skills necessary to be successful at a competitive university. In addition, this offers you an opportunity to work with young people and gain experience of supervising, marking and providing feedback on academic work close to undergraduate level.

Tutors will be paid a flat rate of £150 per student. This will be staggered in 2 payments one at mid-submission, one at completion. Tutors will be expected to mentor at least two students, however this will vary based on the subjects the students choose.

This role requires you to be available in London for around 10 hours between July and September 2015 to meet with and provide feedback to your tutees.

Please note: If you are a non EU resident you must have an in date Working Visa in your passport OR an in date Biometric Working Visa.

Support for PhD candidates who teach

Many of you gain teaching experience at King’s while undertaking your research degree. This is great for you and good for the university too.

We want to make sure those of you who do teach are well supported. Faculties deliver a range of training, induction and buddying arrangements for Teaching Assistants (TAs) and King’s Learning Institute (KLI) also offers the ‘Preparing to Teach’ course and the more advanced PGCAP course that leads to a nationally recognised qualification. KLI has considerably increased capacity on these courses in responses to requests from TAs.

Recently we have had discussions to see how we can improve support further, and that involved a focus group with TAs. In response to the three main suggestions to come out of this session, we have made the following changes:

  1. University policy guidance is now available on the Teaching Opportunities webpage of the Graduate School. Our focus group said they found this a very helpful document but hadn’t previously been aware of it.
  2. KLI has agreed to arrange drop-in sessions for TAs on different campuses so you can call in and get advice on good practice and/or discuss problems you are having with your teaching. These will begin in September 2015.
  3. The Graduate School has set up a discussion forum where you can contact other TAs, share your experience and good practice, as well as offer advice and support to your peers. This can be found on KEATS, but you will need to submit an application form for admission to the forum. This can be found on our internal web pages by clicking here and selecting the tab entitled ‘Forum for King’s Graduate Teaching Assistants’.

The Access Project

Winning a place to study at a top university is an incredible achievement and the start of a life-changing experience. However, for students from disadvantaged areas the step is not easy as they are half as likely as their more affluent peers to get the top grades needed to apply to the most selective universities.

The Access Project matches motivated school students with PhD candidates and Post Docs for weekly one-to-one tutorials, sessions which support their class work and help them boost their grades.

Working in partnership with schools since 2008, the Access Project has a proven track record of raising attainment and widening university access, and they are now working with 14 schools in London.

With the programme expanding, they are looking for more volunteers to tutor students in the following subjects at GCSE and A-level: English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History. They also offer tutorials in Geography, Spanish, French and German, although with less demand from students.

As a tutor, you would meet with your student for one hour a week, at King’s College London (in a suitable public, or freely bookable space). The Access Project trains all volunteers, gives them access to a bank of resources, and their Programme Coordinators are on hand to provide support and guidance. They are unable to pay volunteers, but offer a strong support system and an opportunity to develop teaching and facilitating skills.
