Research, Impact and the UK Parliament

Research, Impact and the UK Parliament is a training conference taking place in UCL on Wednesday 7th June 2017.

This is an opportunity for Kings College London academics to learn how their research can influence and impact proceedings at the UK Parliament.

The event will be at 1.30 – 5.00pm on 7th June 2017 at University College London.  It is open to all academic researchers, from PhD students to senior researchers, and university impact support staff.

At this 3 hour training event, you will learn:

  • How to contact MPs and Members of the House of Lords from Parliament’s Outreach & Engagement Service
  • How to work with Select Committees from a clerk of a House of Commons Select Committee
  • How Parliament has been cited in REF 2014 impact case studies from the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology

Brexit, Movement, Waste – an interdisciplinary exploration

June 2nd, 6:30pm-9:30pm, Anatomy Museum, Strand Campus.

Drawing together academics from across London, Brexit, Movement, Waste is a three-part event series that will employ an interdisciplinary lens, incorporating performance studies, ecocriticism, politics and visual culture to consider what Brexit has brought to the surface, confronting difficult questions of minoritarian politics, immigration, parliamentary sovereignty and transnationalism.

The first event, Brexit & Movement, aims to ask: how might performance’s ‘messy’ ontology disrupt the ‘smooth’ process of retreat? We live in a time that is rapidly upending the predictable futures we envisioned for ourselves and for our nation-states: when neoliberal institutions and ‘Western’ democracies are accelerating towards accentuation and/or collapse; when ‘unthinkable’ outcomes are increasingly proving not only possible but likely; and when the typically laborious gears of bureaucracy, hinged on a single day’s vote, urge us towards fragmentation of the European Union and signal an end to a global post-war system.

What sense of time does a finite politics impose on where we go, how we plan, and what ‘moves’ we must anticipate – from the government and for our future – as citizens of an increasingly fractured Europe? How does Brexit reveal the performance of politics at speed, and what might we gain from thinking through politics as a series of movements or choreographies on the public stage? Capture

This researcher development session will provide:

Elsevier mainly publish scientific journals, so these sessions will have a science focus. However. this session is open to researchers from any discipline wishing to deepen their knowledge of the publication and peer review process.

Summer School in Dresden, Germany, for PhDs & Postdocs

Invitation Summer School “Vocational Integration in Post-Migrant Society”
3-7 July 2017

Open to doctoral and post-doctoral researchers from education, sociology, economics, linguistics, and related disciplines.

You are invited to the International Summer School, which takes place on 3-7 July 2017 and is hosted by the TU Dresden/ Germany (School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Education, Center for Integration Research).

Outlook of the Summer School
In Germany–a country of immigrants—what counts as one of the biggest tasks for society as a whole is the integration of people with diverse backgrounds (ethnicity, age, gender, etc.) into a society which regards itself as inclusive. Therefore, a particular challenge is finding a way to properly utilise and develop the potential of such a diversified society. Societies that are open to such varying diversities are the main focus of research in so-called “post-migrant approaches.” These approaches shift the perspective from migration itself to the processes resulting from it- for example, social and political transformations, conflicts, and identity construction. In this context, the topic of integration and labour in post-migrant societies is of enormous importance, for it is within this area that participation within society is made possible. In light of the shortage of skilled labour and the current climate of demographic transition, integration can furthermore positively influence developments in the labour market. By extensively discussing relevant practices and concepts, Summer School 2017 revolves around the topic of integration with a special focus on how to further develop the structures and processes of vocational training and employment in an age of diversification.

Target Audience: Competition and Selection Process 
The group of participants will consist of researchers (on a doc and post-doc level) based in a variety of fields and from various different countries of origin who have been awarded for their excellent research activities (on the relevant qualification level) and innovative contributions to migration and integration studies.

Those interested are asked to describe their expertise in the subject matter detailed above and to state their motivation for participation in the form of an application. A committee consisting of professors from the Faculty of Education together with representatives of the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Institute of Sociology will be responsible for selecting appropriate candidates. 20 international researchers as well as 5 researchers of TU Dresden will be selected.

This year we’re celebrating Crowns & Colours and the KCLSU Awards in one event – a great night to celebrate students’ achievements with peers and VIPs at the prestigious KCLSU Awards 2017 ceremony, held from 7pm on Tuesday 30 May 2017 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms.

With a bigger venue and more options, this year all students will have the chance to book tickets and attend the awards, with a choice of drinks reception or a three course meal with wine. Tickets go on general sale from 14 April.

 

Advancing Innovation in Health, Idea Workshop

King’s College London Innovation Forum, King’s College London Health and Life Science Enterprise Committee and Entrepreneurship have put together a unique opportunity for you to use your problem-solving skills to come up with solutions to tackle global health challenges we face today. The event is free and open to all at KCL. This special event offers you the opportunity to:

  • Develop ideas in teams to tackle health challenges including (but not limited to) obesity, antimicrobial drug resistance, diabetes and cancer.
  • Receive feedback on the idea from a panel of experts from PwC, QuintilesIMS etc.
  • Present your idea to a panel of judges with expertise in global health from leading organisations including GSK.
  • Each participant will receive a certificate and have chance to win a prize!

If you don’t have an idea or a team, don’t worry just come along and the organisers will assist you in finding a team. If you cannot participate in the workshop, you can still attend the final team presentation. There will be a reception with free food and drinks, plus the opportunity to build your professional networks and develop contacts that may be beneficial for the next step in your career.
